The Miracle is Me

 The Miracle is Me!

So many people self-sabotage their success because of issues they have with their own self-image.  Sometimes, people don't even try new things because they do not consider themselves worthy of success or they think they don't have the intelligence, the right connections, the right education and so on.

Over the years I have learned that the image one has of one's own self is a critical determinant of how far one goes in life.  In a word, the self-image determines the 'realm of the possible'.  As Henry Ford said, "whether you think you can, or you can't, you're right"

Do you know someone who wrestles with an inadequate or compromised self-image?  If so, I am hopeful that this article might be of some assistance to such a person.

I absolutely love the exercise Dr. Joe Dispenza goes through with his followers.  He starts by asking whether you think about your next breath.  Of course none of us do.  Then he asks whether you think about your next heartbeat.  Once again, none of us do.  Your heartbeat is something we never think about.  It happens, like our breathing, automatically without us ever giving it a thought.  He goes on to ask about the process called peristalsis, that process that moves the food we eat through our GI tract.  Once again, none of us ever gives this process a thought.  It operates by way of what doctors, biologists and other scientists call the autonomic nervous system.  Once again, this process happens automatically.

Or what about the process that, by way of enzymes, digests our food and takes the nutrients to supply our bodies with the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that fuel our bodies.  Again, we don't think about that.  It just happens!

Dr. Dispenza goes on to talk about how each of us has over a trillion cells in our body.  And, incredibly, each of those cells undergoes approximately 100,000 chemical reactions every second!  We don't think about these things do we?

I have gone through this exercise with some of my own clients.  The final question in the whole exercise is this:  what is all of that?  what powers all of these processes?  Most people don't really know how to answer.  Many say "Well that is just life".  Most can't go beyond that.  I have to tell them what it is.  Would you like to know what that is?  If so, stay with me for a moment.

The other thing I like asking people about is whether they have ever thought about the science of sight or of hearing or any of our other senses.  Of course, with sight, we know that our eyes take in the light reflected from an image and this image is translated from the back of the eye into electrical impulses to the brain which interprets the image we actually see.  Now don't expect me to explain the science in any more detail than that.  The point is that the ability to see is a complex phenomena that most of us don't understand.  We just know that it is there.  The same can be said of our hearing and all of the other of our senses.  We all take so much for granted don't we?

Why don't we now go one step further and ask ourselves "What about my ability to think, to communicate with others, to feel love or gratitude or any other positive emotion...or envy or jealousy or any of the other negative emotions?  What are feelings anyway?  We only know that positive emotions are good feeling emotions and that negative emotions make us feel bad.  But the deeper question becomes "How do we explain all o this?"  What is an emotion?  Or how do we explain that our heart keeps beating without any conscious thought?  Do you think about your next breath?  Or perhaps a better question might be, could you decide to make your heart stop beating and succeed in doing that?  The obvious answer is no.  Could you decide to stop breathing or stop peristalsis.  Once again, we will all agree that the answer is no.

How many of us ever think about the wonder of being able to love, to feel sadness or exhilaration?  Albert Einstein recognized that, once you start to understand the universe, you cannot but realize that there is intelligent design behind it all.  So getting back to the question posed earlier....what is all of this?  What power keeps your heart beating, your lungs breathing, your cells cranking out 100,000 chemical reactions per second.

What is the power that gave us the gifts of sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell?  What is the power that gave us all the ability to feel emotion, to communicate with one another, to think, to make plans, to imagine.  The answer my friends is that the conclusion is obvious.  The power that keeps your heart beating, the power that created in us the ability to love, to feel the whole array of other positive (and negative) emotions, the power that gave us all of these gifts, is the power of God in you.

In short, we are all walking, talking miracles.  You don't need to go to Lourdes to witness a miracle.  You don't need to read the Bible to discover all of the miracles that Jesus performed.  Would you like to see a miracle?  You need not go anywhere beyond your own self.  Just take one look in the mirror.  What you see is that the miracle is what you see.  The miracle is me.
