A few days ago (or nights, depending on where are) I wrote a blog about health and wellness. Well, I'm back, perhaps by divine inspiration, (as is often said in religious circles); but I do feel the urge to add a few more things about the all-important topic of Living Well and living out our years in perfect health. Wealth without health is a useless cause. This time Im writing about the so called "silent killers". Why you may ask, with all the interesting things to write about, you choose to write about such a scary and alarming topic? Precisely because Life is the most important and precious thing we possess; sacred we may say. In addition, avoiding those conditions can be quite simple, as simple as an annual visit to the doctor, using more vegetables and greens in our diets, eliminating or reducing salt and sugar from our diets, less fats, exercise more, use supplements (as a guarantee for getting all our vitamins and minerals), use antioxidants that protect and enhance our immune system etc. The term "silent killers" refer to medical conditions that can and does claim lives, sometimes at a moment’s notice and without any noticeable symptoms. Among the many silent killers, perhaps the best known is Hypertension; which by itself can lead to stroke, heart disease, heart attack, kidney failure (thus the need for expensive dialysis treatment). The American Heart association has advised that there are some one in three Americans who have Hypertension...and don't know it, since there aren't any noticeable symptoms. That is the scary thing about silent killers, and the reason for routine medical checkups, healthy dieting, exercise, and maintaining a positive mental attitude. If we heard there was an armed robber on the prowl in our community, we would be extra careful about our movements, making sure our homes are protected; leaving lights and TV on at times, as security measures. Likewise we aught to treat the "silent killers" like prowlers in our neighbourhoods, waiting to steal our treasure. Becoming more aware and educated health-wise is advised; for example, knowing one's blood pressure numbers (and understanding the difference between dyastolic and systolic). Those numbers the amount of pressure the blood is exerting on the blood vessels while the heart is resting and working. Knowing one's cholesterol and blood sugar levels are equally important. Know your numbers. Eat well..! Live well and live a long healthy life.
