In military jargon relating to military operations, we often hear talk about "staying the course", which we understand to mean, being focused, goal oriented and on mission until the objective has been achieved. It is likewise important in scholastic studies, sports and business and other areas, to stay the course; staying focused, goal oriented and on mission.
I often look to nature and real life situations for examples, similes and metaphors for understanding much of what happens around me.
Last evening I needed to travel from one islands to the next. After missing an early boat, I decided to take my friend up on his offer to take me along when returning later in the night to take a group of Sky Dancers back to their destination (same as I was traveling to). My friend, a young and ambitious captain is a professional at what he does and does it for his living.
The distance between destinations must have been fifteen or twenty miles and it was late and dark; the stars being out main source of illumination.
We left around midnight. I hadn't done night sailing in quite a long time (years), so I'm not that up on procedures rules of the road etc. The vessel itself was in pretty good condition with instruments that must have also been in equally good condition. As we left the music was turned up to entertain the young dance group who after a night of dancing wanted to be entertained themselves. It actually felt like a party (without the booze) Along the channel we traveled were other boats, smaller islands and cays. Fishermen usually set their traps in the area, and there's always the possibility of running into a floating log or other hazard .
It is worth noting that even though the machinery and equipment on a vessel may be in good condition and working well, It is the knowledge skill and experience of the captain that keeps the vessel on its path, taking it safely into the harbour.
As was expected, the captain, confident as he is, did a masterly job of maneuvering his vessel and taking us safely to our destination on the other side. Interestingly after letting us off, he had to make the trip back alone. Thinking about the experience while on the water and when safely bask in my home, I found myself thinking about the training, experience and skill one must develop in order to accomplish such feats.
The captain knew exactly where he was going and how to get there safely. So to we in life and in our marketing professions must develop our skill, gain knowledge and experience, set achievable goals and stay on our path until the mission has been accomplished.
