During the early 1990-s (90 - 93) I had a very interesting job; marketing and promoting the Virgin Islands, Uk as a preferred vacation destination throughout the western United States and Canada. Much like popular musicians traveling from city to city, and staying in some of the best hotels, my job pretty much treated me with similar goodness. The memories I've had along the way, will for ever be with me, and I treasure them. Speaking of memories, especially being cognisant of the recent passing of world renown author (best seller), and motivational speaker Stephen Covey, a particular memory comes to mind. During flight, as soon, or shortly after the plane climbed to elevation (35,000 ft or there about), the stewardess (or whoever was responsible for the entertainment center), would set up various business selections (talks) by various authors and public speakers to be played throughout most of the flight. Tom Peters. a passionate and fiery speaker was a regular. but there were others, including Best Seller, Zig Zigler (best known for "One Minute Manager"), and the Giant himself, Steven Covey; best known for his multi-million dollar seller "7 habits of Highly Effective People".
Perhaps a synopsis of his 7 Principles are in order here: (1)Be Proactive As human beings - we are responsible for our own lives and have the independent will to make our own choices and decisions - and the responsibility to make the right choices.
(2)Begin with The End In Mind "All things are created twice: first -- the mental conceptualization and second -- the physical actual creation"
(3) Put First Things First With your power of independent will - you can create the ending you want to have
(4) Think Win.! Win..! "If you believe in a better way to accomplish goals that are mutually beneficial to all sides, that is a win/win situation"
(5) Seek First To Understand; Then To Be Understood...
(6) Synergize: Synergistic communication, according to Covey, is "opening one's mind and heart to new possibilities, new alternatives, new options, creative corporation, open-minded"
(7) Sharpen the Saw.... Sometimes we get co caught up working on the other six habits that we forget about re-energizing and renewing ourselves to deal with the tasks at hand. Some methods for re-energizing and keeping one's freshness, clarity, and pointedness include: proper nutrition, exercise, reading, writing, music, service (to others, including community), fantasy, study, mental gymnastics, meditation etc. anything that stimulate the mind Stephen Covey's (1932 -2012) life, and contributions to the world is enormous and priceless..... a Classic if you will....
