"Where you've been might have been great......but where you're going is greater". (Unknown)
What time is it? ...Its time for the largest competitive sporting event in the world; the quadrennial Olympics. For the past four (4) years, athletes all around the world (from at least 200 nations), have been training rigorously for this extremely competitive event. To most of us, it seems like work.; some of it on the verge of being torture; but to these gifted goal-oriented individuals, it comes natural; and goes with the territory. When one's eyes are set on the prize, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS....
The selection process must be a rather nerve wrecking experience for the judges (or selection committee, if they are called that); but a most pleasurable experience for us spectators as these gifted athletes one after the other, gracefully go through their presentation routines. Then comes the final day of act after all the preparation; quite a spectacle.
As I watch, three words pop into my mind; Good -Better - Best. As good as they all appear, and might be, not everyone will be a winner and compete for the gold. What is most interesting is the actual value of the gold and silver medals with the gold being estimated at around $450 and the silver quite a bit less. It appears then, that the value of the medal is not that big a deal in itself; given the estimated value of the metals. Of far greater significance then is the opportunity to compete on the world stage, with the best in their sport and to be known as a record setter, or record breaker and of course the after-the-fact fringe benefits.
As onlooker, we look on in utter amazement as the athletes perform in blemish-free fashion pondering questions such as their desires, determination, passions, mindset and their will etc. For sure, athletes are some of the most goal oriented group of folks around around.
As marketers, there's much we can learn and ponder from looking at the competition in the Olympics; but not only there but in the world of competition in general. "Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal". Rita Davenport
