While I have been a city dweller for several of my years, I am also pretty comfortable with country living....living a bit closer to nature. The thought of the word "Spider" may activate in others Arachnophobia, (fear of spiders) at the thought of being anywhere near a spider; but I am fascinated by these incredible insects (the harmless ones of course; that you often don't see, but whose evidence is often seen in the roofs and corners of our homes). Even on my spare tire at the back of my vehicle, spiders find it beneficial to spin a web from time to time. Wherever they sense an area to be a food source, they will quickly spin and set a web.
What is so fascinating about spiders you ask? I am particularly fond of the web, its shape and the time it takes to spin it. It is quite an intricate piece of work and they are able to create it as if by magic. One of my most fascinating moments was an occasion when I left a bouquet of flowers on the dining table for my mother. The following day, I noticed stands of spider web hanging from perhaps 12-feet above, connected to the rafters and attached to many areas of the bouquet of flowers; and in quite an orderly fashion and spacing.
Looking at a spider web one can learn quite a bit. One of the first things I think of is where did the skill to produce such a masterpiece came from?. Are they taught like other species (hens teach their chicks to scratch the ground to search for food, what to eat and avoid etc.; cows and other mammals don't eat poisonous grass and shrubs; and birds teach their young to fly). I can only suspect that nature has endowed the spiders with this amazing survival skill. Why a circular web and not a square or other shape?. They seem to instinctively design their webs to catch their prey from any given angle.
I have watched this intelligent little specie spin its web, then hide in an inconspicuous area and wait or go to sleep. As soon as an insect gets trapped into it, the spider immediately picks up the vibration and delicately climbs over to his victim, without causing any further harm to the web, and in the event it gets damaged, he repairs it at will; so amazing.... Teach a man or woman Web-spinning and you feed him/her for life (~/\~)
In the holy scriptures, we are told to "Watch the ant and be wise". While there is a lot to be learned from the ambitious ant, I suggest we also "look at the amazing Spider" Aircraft designers apparently learned a lot from studying birds (the way they fly, wing shape etc). It's also apparent that the search engines owners have learned a lot from spiders. They talk about crawling and spidering our websites in order to index them. We can even schedule our sites to be crawled and re-crawled by these same behind-the-scenes crawlers. Rather fascinating....
Spiders can create just about any shape web; hanging, circular or whatever, given the available space, but the one I find most fascinating is the circular web. At 360 degrees (a complete circle) its capable of capturing TRAFFICE from any angle. Likewise our TRAFFIC should be coming from many different angles (Seo, article directories, social sites, Classified ADS, Forums, Blogs etc). The web is designed to do what we often talk about in marketing: "Set it and and forget it..!". As marketers, we receive residual income for work we already did. The spider likewise do the hard work of spinning its web and receives residual benefits from the hard work already done. (~/\~)
In our marketing, if we are using only a limited few of the traffic methods, our webs are not doing 360-degree marketing and are missing tons of traffic.... “leaving much desired money on the table”.

 | | I love your post and your illustration with the spider. Also your reference to the search engines and talking about how they crawl your websites. A novel way to do this indeed. This one is going to Twitter and Facebook. ~Terri Pattio - MLM Coach/Mentor with a servant's heart |
