By Cindy Trethewey

Now that cannabis oil is in the mainstream news and on store shelves internationally, it's only a matter of due diligence on behalf of cannabis activists to continue probing the topic of cancer vs cannabis.

Can CBD hemp oil cure or treat cancer?

The short official answer to this question is: NO!

CBD hemp oil cannot cure prevent, or treat cancer! It' against the law for anyone in America to utter "cure" or "treat" with respect to natural homeopathic medicines or plant-based therapies for the natural treatment of a disease or medical problems even if the plant-based product is considered a food by the FDA, such as CBD hemp oil. However, there is a plethora of scientific empirical evidence that favors the genus cannabis as a potential treatment method for cancer.

See for more CBD medical research.

Let's garner a few truthful but controversial facts in order to gain some perspective on this raging debate about cannabis and cancer:

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved and does not condone cannabis as a treatment for cancer or any other medical condition.
  • On October 2nd of 2003, The United States Government as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services was granted a US Patent #6630507 on any and all uses and applications of Cannabinoids (from cannabis and the plant kingdom) as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. The link to the Patent is Here: If cannabis is a Schedule 1 drug defined as having no currently accepted medical use then why does the US Government have a patent on cannabinoids for medical uses? Herein lies the controversy.
  • Schedule I (
Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.

Some examples of Schedule I drugs are:
1. heroin,
2. lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD),
3. marijuana (cannabis),
4. 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy),
5. methaqualone, and
6. peyote

  • If the phytocannabinoids found in cannabis have no medicinal value as laid out by its Schedule 1 drug status under the Controlled Substance Act, then why does GW Pharmaceuticals hold multiple patents related to phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant? See proof of a partial patent chart for GW Pharmaceuticals here:
  • According to a new report from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, in 16 years, cancer will become the leading cause of death in the United States, surpassing heart disease.
  • "Government figures for 2014 show cancer was the leading cause of death in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin." Retrieved from
  • No one has ever died as a direct result of consuming cannabis or by ingesting concentrated cannabis oil from either marijuana strains or the hemp variety.

The current controversy surrounding the status of cannabis being mislabeled as a Schedule 1 narcotic by the US government is exactly how the powers that be have stymied medical cannabis research on living cancer patient models. All of this nonsense is become past tense. CBD or cannabidiol was officially removed from the controlled substance Schedule 1 list with the recent advent of the 2018 Farm Bill. And this awakening has been a long time coming.

But, when referencing cannabis as a potential treatment for cancer, let's just quote Dr. Christina Sanchez, a cannabis biochemist from Madrid, Spain, "At this point, we have enough pre-clinical evidence to support the idea that cannabinoids may have anti-tumoral properties!" Notice even though Dr. Sanchez and her team of colleagues have discovered that THC and CBD have proven to induce cancer cell death in her own lab studies, she can only state these conclusions using the prefaced words, "cannabinoids may have" anti-tumoral properties! Dr. Sanchez doesn't come right out and say cannabinoids have anti-tumoral properties because of the obvious lack of direct studies of cannabis on humans with cancer.

Are you surprised! NO! You're not surprised! To the controllers, it doesn't matter what "we the people" want, need or think. And people truly want safe, affordable plant-based medicine with few or no side effects! In order for the rest of the entire medical society to accept the potential healing properties of the cannabis plant along with the findings of Dr. Christina Sanchez and her colleagues, the medical community will continue rehashing the same rhetoric, that there are not enough controlled scientific studies to support any healing claims wherever cannabis and cancer are concerned. This is evidenced by the backward stance of the FDA and the DEA on the matter!

But have the unbiased scientific studies been delayed, curtailed, silenced and overlooked on purpose by those who stand to profit the most if cannabis is reclassified as a non-controlled substance? Judging from the statements of cannabis using cancer survivors and pre-clinical research, this appears to be the case! The medical establishment and certain political powers want to dictate what Americans can say and what we cannot say about cannabis and cancer, even if a particular person believes cancer cured their own cancer. Isn't this cannabis free speech censorship! Oh, we totally get that! Further, if cannabis has shown any medicinal value in your life, be it for cancer or acne, your testimony to this effect falls under what scientists call anecdotal evidence, which is meaningless to the controllers of cannabis law in the United States. Laws surrounding cannabis being labeled as a Schedule 1 controlled substance are not altered as a result of anecdotal medical evidence or personal healing testimonies. But maybe this trend is soon to change as a matter of legal precedent. For the first time in history, there is a federal class-action lawsuit alleging a violation of constitutional rights from the plaintiffs who believe it's their right to choose cannabis for their own individual medical treatment. The plaintiffs are represented by four American citizens, an ex-NFL football player, a child with epilepsy, an infant (represented by the parents), a disabled veteran with PTSD, together with the Cannabis Cultural Association, Inc. The defendants in the case are Jeff Sessions (US Attorney General), Chuck Rosenberg (former acting head of the DEA), the DEA, the U.S. Justice Department and the United States of America. See this fascinating article about this unprecedented lawsuit here at  ***Interjection. Recent public pressure against Sessions and his pursuits resulted in his elimination from office. So his interference is no longer a stumbling block in that advancement of the hemp movement. Hemp is no longer a movement. Hemp is an industry.

Yes, it is true that medical studies on human models using cannabis as a cancer treatment are virtually non-existent and these studies have not been awarded proper research funding. This entire storyline is definitely beginning to take the shape of a contrived modern day conspiracy to withhold plant-based medicine from the people. As a result of this deliberate lack of funding going to medical cannabis research along with its irresponsible classification as a Schedule 1 drug, there are only a handful of cannabis studies currently underway on human models representing cancer patients. Knowing that cancer is the #1 killer in the world and a growing body of favorable pre-clinical cannabis studies on cancer exist, you would think the medical establishment would be scrambling to perform cancer studies with cannabis on humans, el pronto! But no way Jose, there are only three studies going on, while everyone sits back and watches over 500,000 people die of cancer in the United States each year! Right now on a global scale, there are about 8.8 million annual deaths from cancer.

Cancer and Cannabinoid Medical Treatments Currently Underway,
  • Cannabidiol (CBD) by mouth to treat solid tumors that have recurred (come back).
  • An oral spray combining 2 cannabinoids (delta-9-THC and CBD) given with temozolomide to treat recurrent glioblastoma multiforme.
  • Cannabidiol (CBD) to treat acute graft-versus-host disease in patients who have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Both cancer patients and cannabis supporters continue to push for more funding for cannabis-based medical studies on human cancer models. This has been a long, rocky and frustrating road for homeopaths who support cannabis as an alternative to medicine, indeed. Once again, let me interject, I am not indicating that cannabis is, in fact, a medicine. I am only stating that cannabis researchers themselves point to the potential medicinal benefits of the cannabis plant from their own medical studies. And there is no doubt about it until the cannabis plant is removed from the Schedule 1 controlled substance list, more potential cannabis medical studies will be suppressed because funding is being denied.

Excerpts Taken From The National Cancer Institute Website,
  • No clinical trials of Cannabis as a treatment for cancer in human models have been found in the CAM on PubMed database maintained by the National Institutes of Health.
  • "Chemical components of Cannabis, called cannabinoids, activates specific receptors throughout the body to produce pharmacologic effects, particularly in the central nervous system and the immune system."
  • "Cannabinoids may have benefits in the treatment of cancer-related side effects."

Do I really personally believe in the powers of cannabis? YES!

Is it legal for me to believe in something contrary to conventional science? YES!

Can I secretly believe that cannabis has specific properties that are illegal to utter in a society coveted by big pharmaceutical giants? YES!

Should cannabis be included as one of the superfoods given to cancer patients to assist in cancer therapies? I am entitled to my own opinion. And in my opinion, of course! Many cancer patients themselves who have already chosen cannabis over traditional cancer treatment to assist themselves in their own personalized cancer therapy, would answer, YES! Most cannabis activists would probably concur that adding cannabis to a cancer patient's diet would be a positive novel approach to the brutalities of traditional cancer treatments. In fact, it is already medically documented that CBD helps to relieve nausea in cancer patients. We are allowed to say that. We are not suggesting that these cancer patients smoke weed, however! The combustion from the act of smoking, in and of itself destroys the highly prized cannabinoids. The premise is for the patient to ingest cannabis in raw juice form, healthy edibles, tinctures, in a paste formula, in capsules, suppositories or in some cases through a vaporizer, and only to do so where these methods are now legal. If a particular cannabis blend given to a cancer patient is legal or not would depend on the strain. In order to help a cancer patient find some form of relief, this is where legal CBD hemp oil, with <.3% THC by dry weight, could possibly become a beneficial healthy substitute for otherwise illegal strains of marijuana with substantial levels of THC. Legal CBD hemp oil made from industrial hemp is classified by the FDA as a health food supplement. Therefore, cancer patients are beginning to discover CBD hemp oil as a powerful source of nutrition to help nourish their body's endocannabinoid system, which in turn regulates the internal health of their immune systems. And in medical marijuana states, it is well known that cannabis is being provided to cancer patients for pain and nausea.

So does cannabis oil kill cancer?

They spilled the beans. They let the cat out of the bag. And they let the genie out of the bottle. Let's see what the National Cancer Institute had to say about the matter:

"Studies in mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells." Apr 13, 2017

Secondly, the most up to date and brilliant talk on the subject of cancer and cannabis medicinal treatment potentials comes from Dr. Christina Sanchez, a Molecular Biologist of Complutense University in Madrid Spain (youtube channel: CBD Healthcare). See the video below.

In the following video, the renown cannabis microbiologist and expert, Dr. Christina Sanchez talks about the medicinal properties of the two most prominent cannabinoid compounds CBD and THC in the cannabis plant. THC was discovered by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam of Hebrew University, as he studied the psychoactive properties of the cannabis plant. Dr. Christina Sanchez narrates the video (below) explaining her decade long career in cannabis research and how cannabis effects tumors as a result of using both CBD and THC compounds in a variety of strains.

In the 1980s, scientists discovered that the human body has its own indigenous chemical endocannabinoid factory. Endocannabinoids are chemicals that are manufactured by the human body through our uptake of certain foods, such as cannabis, nuts, seeds, and chocolate to name a few. It is through this endocannabinoid system that the human body regulates all biochemical functions in the cells of each of our bodily systems to arrive at homeostasis and balance, systems such as our vital organs, the central and peripheral nervous systems, and our immune system.

Backing up all that Dr. Christina Sanchez discusses, is a recent admission from the National Institute for Health, they stated that cannabis is, in fact, a potential "destroyer" or "killer" if you will of cancer cells. Here is the quote is taken from the NIH comment of cannabinoids, "cannabis and cannabinoids may have benefits in treating the symptoms of cancer or the side effects of cancer therapies."
