While searching for a social networking browser, I saw a recommendation for a browser named RockMelt. Strange name for a browser but it is based on the Google Chromium software for stability. Social networkers, especially those on Facebook, may enjoy the ability to keeping their friends in a side panel, ready to chat at any time.
You may also enjoy one-click access to the latest updates on your favorite site, which does not necessarily have to be a social networking site. However, adding that site is not all that easy. For instance, I tried adding my LinkedIN site and was told it was not a valid RSS feed. Strange, neither was ketv.com and that was added.
RockMelt did not even recognize that I visited LinkedIN on the recently viewed list. Only the most recent YouTube Videos were there. Why would I add them to the sidebar to access just that particular video? Makes no sense. RockMelt added CNN, Twitter and YouTube as the Featured Apps. Any other site on your Recently Viewed sites list can be added by clicking the star next to it.
Another option is adding a post to Facebook or Twitter from anywhere without being on the site. RockMelt does that by keeping you logged into those sites. Now, I am not sure what kind of security issues that may bring and I am hesitant to put my login info into new applications that I have not begun to trust. However, how is one to trust an application without trying it first? So I did and have so far experienced no ill effects.
One thing I noticed was when you do a search, a panel appears with the search engine results. You can review the list of results and when clicking one, the list stays open while you view the web page. That way you can quickly go to the next site while continuing your research.
Be careful clicking too fast though. As I was searching for another social media browser, some sites took too long to load so I kept clicking other links. Apparently RockMelt got jealous and crashed. Guess it showed me who the king of social networking browsers was, especially since about 90% of the search results were about RockMelt.
The bottom line is that I am not entirely sold on RockMelt, but it has some interesting social networking features, along with some serious updates to do before I use it on a consistent basis. If you want to try it out for yourself, go to www.rockmelt.com
