Earlier today I read a post on IBO written by Sharon Tate about “Solar Energy Worldwide” www.ibosocial.com/TheDiamonds this got me thinking of how Portland Oregon is such a “green” city.
Here we go. From my thoughts to your eyes.
It is sunny and 64F with a slight breeze. The trees are full of their green splendor, the rhododendrons are in bloom one with red flower and the other with purple flowers, and the day lilies have orange/yellow petals. Not only do I have this view of my front yard, I have a flowing creek in the back. Trees with white flowers, red leaf Japanese maples, wild white orchards and purple vines with blue flowers encase the land. Canadian geese, raccoons & blue herons have stopped by to use the creek as their watering hole.
The above is what most people think of when they think of Oregon being “green”. They might not realize that there is another part of us Oregonians of being “green”. Being “green” to the environment. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Instead of regular garbage being picked-up every week without any recycling it has changed to every other week. The reason for this is there is less to throw away that can't be recycled. Every week there is recycling for glass, plastic, paper, metal, yard debris & food waste (this even includes bones). No we can't dump dead bodies in there. LOL
In my particular area there is battery recycling that is done through the mail. This is new. For a small fee I get a battery recycling kit to place my used batteries in. It may take 3 months to fill it. My family mainly use rechargable batteries. When it is full I seal it up and send it in the mail, no postage necessary.
Just the other day I took 2 computer towers to my local Good Will drop off donation truck, right by my grocery store. They not only take the usual stuff they also do e-cycling (recycling for old computers and other electronics). I was not only able to recycle them I get to have a tax donation for doing this.
My local library has a parking slot just for electricl cars. While charging their brains in the library the owners get their car charged.
At my local grocery store plastic bags are not used to bag your groceries. It is strongly encouraged to bring in your reusable bags. If you forget to bring yours they sell them there for only $1. If you don't want to buy one they will bag with paper bags. These are made of mostly post-paper products.
I'm a Portlander and proud of it; born, raised & most likely die in this beautiful city.
