Did you know that listening is one of the most valuable assets you can have, especially if you use social media to build your business?

Why is listening so important?

For starters, listening is a process that is necessary to keep any business strategy fresh and competitive. It allows you to make a decision based on better understanding opportunities and knowing what is at stake.

Listening can be your very best friend and well determine your success! So how can you go about listening and use it to your advantage?

First, you must decide who your target audience is. This is extremely important because you want to make sure you are listening to the right people! Next, find out where this audience hangs out so that you can properly engage and interact with them.

Take a look around and see who the most influential people are within the network. These are the people that you want to follow, friend and interact with. Here are a couple interesting statistics that support what a just mentioned:

"A research report from Meteor Solutions found that the type of people who follow or friend you are more important than the numbers.

On average, approximately 1% of a site’s audience generates 20% of all its traffic through sharing of the brand’s content or site links with others.

This was backed by a Forrester Research report that showed a minority (about 6% of people) generates 80% of the impressions, and roughly 13% of the online adults generate 80% of the influence posts."

Interesting, right?

Your success is determined by listening to what your customers or business partners have to say and collaborating with them to meet their expectations.

Listening is a phenomenal social business strategy to employ and is great means for gathering information to drive business results.

Great PR Kris - the figures are very interesting - especially when you think that around 15% of the population control 80% of the wealth. There seems to be a correlation to me.

I agree with Debra Reed, another great blog. I like to remind people that the only way you will receive objections or rejections are when you don't listen. If you listen to people, you only offer things to people that they "want" and then there is no reason to object or reject.

The one we like is "you income will in the center of the people who are your close friends". To us this means to make more money we need friends who are doing well in business. On IBO we find ones who are making more and ones who are making less. It is easy to tell them apart too.

Great advice Kris. I do tend to talk too much. I am usually excited about something and just keep talking. I prefer to use chat and type my messages and that way I can 'listen' to the other person more.
