Things To Try On Your First Cruise

10 things to try for the first time on a cruise

Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or are getting ready to step onboard for the very first time, you’re likely to be aware of the activities on offer. Every year cruise lines continue to launch more varied and exciting activities onboard their ships. You’ll find many are things you’ve never tried before, or if you have, you almost definitely won’t have tried them quite like this. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the top cruise activities.

Rock climbing

It’s one thing to set sail onboard a towering cruise ship, but quite another to literally raise the stakes and scale a rock climbing wall above that very same vessel. Marella Cruises has recently added rock climbing to the long list of at-sea activities available onboard Marella Discovery. It’s an open-air rock wall where you can get harnessed in and scramble up the vertical side for a birds-eye view of the ship’s deck and the sea beyond.

Dance lessons

Nightlife and dancing are big elements of cruising – and luckily lines like Cunard can help make sure your moves are up to standard. Queen Mary 2’s Queens Room is the largest ballroom at sea, offering daily complimentary dance classes to match. After that, you can show off your skills at royal night-themed balls, where dinner jackets, ball gowns and a live orchestra are the norm.

Minigolf may already be one of your favourite pastimes, but we’re sure you won’t have tried it like this. Marella Discovery offers some of the line’s best cruise ship facilities, now adding a minigolf course to its repertoire. Here you can take to the ship’s nine-hole course and challenge your friends and family to a round on the green with a heavy side of sweeping ocean vistas.

Outdoor cinema

Outdoor cinemas on a cruise ship offer movie nights unlike any you’ve been to before. Most of the outdoor film nights at sea take place right beside the pool, too, so you’re right in the centre of the action. With Marella Cruises, the open-air cinema shows classic film favourites along with recent hits, made sweeter with popcorn and hot chocolate from the bar nearby.

Wine tasting

Everyone knows that cuisine is among the best aspects of cruising, but drinks deserve their rightful place at the top, too. If you’ve ever wanted to start yourself on the path to becoming a wine connoisseur, cruises are the place to do it – especially if you’re setting sail with Cunard. The line offers a particularly comprehensive wine experience, with masterclasses from leading winemakers, wine tastings and workshops and fine wine seminars featuring state of the art wine equipment.

Sing for an audience

We’re not just talking plain old karaoke here, as Princess Cruises offers a full-blown singing competition on the line’s The Voice of the Ocean competition. Cruisers can participate in blind singing auditions for judges, rotating chairs included. The amateur singers are assigned vocal coaches and will have time to rehearse before the big show, where the audience votes for the ultimate winner. Nerve racking? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Spa treatments

Cruises are renowned for their relaxation potential, and there’s no better way to cash in than at the spa. The vast majority of modern cruise ships boast their own spa facilities, many of which rival some of the best spas on land. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 plays host to her very own Canyon Ranch SpaClub, whose treatments are among the best and most luxurious around. Here, you can expect indoor swimming pools, massage and beauty treatments and saunas.

Escape rooms

You’ve probably heard the hype about escape rooms. Locked in a room with friends and family members, you must put the clues together and solve puzzles in order to escape before time runs out. As these on-land phenomena’s hit the seas, now’s your chance to show your skills. Marella Discovery is home to its very own onboard escape room where you and your party can put your brains together to see how fast you can get out.

Yoga is one of those unique activities that somehow gets your heart rate up and your breathing rate down at the same time. It’s a great way to combine relaxation and exercise active cruise holidays. Yoga at sea combines the peacefulness of yoga moves with the tranquillity of your surroundings – classes typically take place out on an open deck, where you can drink in the calm vibes afforded by sea views and a fresh breeze. There’s nothing quite like it.
Art classes

With so many beautiful landscapes whisking past your cabin window, you’ll relish any opportunity to capture the scenery around you on your cruise. Instead of doing so with just a camera, Cunard offers the chance to let you use the inspiration from your adventures for onboard art classes. Then, with your new-found knowledge in hand, you can set off to the line’s onboard gallery to see how the pros do it.

Cruise ships are giving us whole new ways to see the world, with plenty of experiences to enjoy onboard too. Keep our suggestions in mind as you plan a cruise that sublimely blends your favourite shipborne activities with the destinations you’ve always wanted to sail to.
