As an insurance broker a large part of my job is helping people find the best plans to meet their needs.  I of course have expanded that to assist them in applying for the subsidies through  I have had dozens of my clients try to get approved through that website.  So far only TWO have been successful.  Only one of those two actually qualified for a subsidy.  One of my clients we have a combined 20 hours wrapped up into applying as we get to the same spot in the application, then we get an error message.  It says try back in 30 minutes, if the problem persists call the 800 number.  Well the problem persisted so we called the 800 number, and you know what, they look at the same site we look at, so if we get stuck so do they.  Their help was try again. This is just great!

As you move forward with this project, you need to determine if you will get a subsidy and how much.  A great website to calculate if you will get a subsidy is from the Kaiser foundation .  While I this is very accurate, it does not as detailed as your official subsidy.  The official subsidy is based on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI).  So there are a few more components that go into it than the Kaiser calculator, but it will tell you if you should apply for a subsidy or not.

I will also advise you if the subsidy that you are entitled to is a minimal amount.  In my case, the calculator said I would get about $55 per month in subsidy.  For the time that site takes, I will not apply for a subsidy.  There has also been a lot of talk on the news lately that the website may not be completely secure.  Since I am not a technological guy, I cannot confirm or deny that, what I do know is I will not take that chance for $55 per month.  For $550 per month I would definitely take that chance.

If you do not qualify for a subsidy or do not want to apply for a subsidy there are other ways to apply for health insurance.  First if you do not have any major medical conditions some carriers can write you a 2013 plan that you can keep for another year.  This would in a sense defer the Affordable Care Act for one year.  Who know what happens then, there are several bills being worked on now that you may be able to keep it more than a year if you qualify now.  You would need an effective date of no later than December 282013 for those plans.  You can contact your broker for that information.  You could also get that from several insurance quote engines like quotit corporation You can also visit my website at

If you do have a pre-existing condition, you have two options.  You can go “on the marketplace” which is where you would try to qualify for your subsidy.  You would start at  You can also apply manually if you do not want to put your information into the website.  It takes six to eight weeks to do it that way ( email me or call me and I will send you the application for a subsidy).  If you do not qualify for a subsidy or do not wish to apply again you can use my website  listed above.  There are others like ehealthinsurance or Gohealth.  They always say time is money.  It could never be more true here.

Thanks for reading.
