ON ENCOURAGEMENT
We are living in tough economic times. Some people are wondering when they’re really going to hit bottom and if their lives will ever be the same again. Yet some people are living busy lives and are bombarded with demands and deadlines and many are experiencing a creeping weariness in their bodies. However, people in general are very resillient and they get through these challenging times.
Wherever we are economically, we all need encouragement – somebody to believe in us. We need someone telling us, “Come on you can do it!” Someone to help us pick up the pieces and move on. Someone to provide us with persistent determination inspite of the odds.
Courage in Latin is ‘cor’ meaning heart, and encouragement has its root in the Latin word ‘cor.’ So, if to have courage means to have heart, to encourage then, is to provide or give courage.
Encouragement is therefore an act of inspiring others with renewed courage, spirit and hope. To encourage others is to spur them on, appreciate and affirm them. It is important to know though that there’s a difference between appreciation and affirmation. We appreciate what a person does and we affirm who a person is.
The best part about encouragement is that anybody can do it. No matter your age or financial status, we all can give encouragement. It can come quietly with a smile or a quick pat on the back, a thank you, a praise, an acknowledgment, gesture like “I care about you and what you do.” Or it can come wrapped in packages of all kinds, depending on how creative one is.
It is a way of communicating that “You’re doing an excellent job,” “You’re on the right track.” However form you give them – encouragement is plain positive feedback! Encouragement boosts performance, strengthens our resolve and improves our general well-being.
Just like any good trait, the ability to encourage is developed first at home. It is at home that this important virtue is cultivated. If you’re just starting a family, I challenge you to have a home where a spirit of positive, consistent encouragement is genuinely practiced daily.
Before you know it, as parents you take it to the workplace, your children will take it to school, and in turn to the world that desperately needs it. It is much easier to discourage others – the world is full of discouragers. But I would like to encourage you to make a difference in this world. Commit yourself to be an encourager and together we can make this world a much better place for all of us.
