Regular Tasks - a step on the way to success

If you believe all the marketing hype, you could believe that you can spend every day at the beach with just a couple of hours light work and if you are lucky to find a decent wi-fi hotspot that can actually happen. Or if there is no wi-fi and you don't want to bother with electronics, you could just take a notebook and pen and hand-write a PR or blog post to type and upload later. Or you could sit at a sunny outdoor cafe or a pub beer garden right in your own town centre or village and make a few phone calls or send some text or messages to new associates you've made and do all the other essential things to keep your business running without spending all day at your desk.

To get to that point, however, especially if you want to give up a regular day job, you have to face the fact that affiliate marketing also involves routine tasks and self-discipline.

It is absolutely possible to organize your regular business activity such that you can get through them in a couple of hours and spend the rest of the day doing other things. If I find that my daily tasks regularly overflow, maybe something needs simplifying or even cutting out if it doesn't bring me good results for the time taken.

It also frees you up to experiment and try new marketing methods or to allow you to attend an event where you might meet people who could be interested in your product or services.

A new IBO associate happened to mention to me this week that he had been in the military prior to getting into affiliate marketing. This is my message to him.

In the military, you live every day with discipline, a certain amount of routine tasks and also achieving measurable results. So, apply the same principles to everything you do to work your new business.

Start with a task list, so you know what you really need to do each day and make everything you do, be effective and count towards your future success.

Not everyone's daily task list is going to be the same or done in the same order, but broadly, this is what mine looks like. Not all my tasks are listed, but you will get a flavour.

  • Email – check for anything from your upline, team, company head office, make notes for things to do later if appropriate
  • Make face to face or phone contact with potential new team members or new/existing customers (for a product based opportunity, customers who place regular orders are JUST as important as new affiliates in your team – they can be your bread and butter!)
  • IBO – check for new associates or messages and deal with those – make notes for any follow up tasks to do later
  • Instagram/Facebook business page/Pinterest/Twitter– use the Later scheduler* to set up posts for the day. Research new hashtags for your niche to use in captions
  • Facebook groups – post in groups for work at home opportunities, and on your timeline and business pages
  • Safelists – this is an activity that I tend to leave till later in the day as it doesn't require a lot of attention. I can watch a favourite TV show while I click for credits. Then I can send out a pre-written message using my credits.

After that, I will then turn to more creative tasks like writing or designing a new page or ad image.

If I am out, I will always have a notebook and pen if I get an idea for a landing/squeeze page design, a slogan or email subject or similar.

I am retired now, so my days are more my own than someone who needs to fit marketing activities around a full time job and/or family duties. In those cases, good organization and discipline to stick to a task list is even more important to condense the essentials into whatever time you have in a day.

Building a strong team in any opportunity doesn't happen in the blink of an eye. Seeds don't turn into trees overnight and a baby takes months from conception to birth. Have patience and stick to your routine and you can get there.

*The Later scheduler is free at the basic level and allows you to pre-set up posts to Instagram, Facebook pages, Twitter and Pinterest to go immediately or when you are asleep or busy elsewhere.
