While at my home back in Barrackville, WV, I decided to visit one of my favorite stores, Gabriiel Brothers which is locally referred to as Gabes. It is a discount store that sells a little of everything from small household items to discounted shoes and other clothing items. While there, I ran into one of my old friends, Kip Price. Kip worked at one Rivesville and Harrison Power Stations during his career at Allegheny Power which is the same company I had retired from. Kip is also retired now, but has been called back to perform some contract work for the current company, First Energy.
After the initial greetings and reminiscing, Kip informed me of one of a project he was working on. He told me the story of James Aubrey Stewart. Aubrey Stewart grew up just four houses from Kip in the town of Piedmont, WV. Aubrey Stewart along with 10 other African American soldiers fought in one of the biggest battles of World War II, The Battle of the Bulge. Aubrey and his fellow soldiers were overrun by the Germans in Belgium. The eleven soldiers escaped and were taken in by a Belgian familiy. Unfortunately, a German SS officer's relative saw them and reported this to the German troups in the area. The eleven were discovered, but rather than risk the lives of the Belgian family that had taken them in, they surrendered to the Germans. After surrendering, they were taken out into a field next to the Belgian home where they were shot and mutlilated. The bodies lay there for 58 days and were preserved due to the extremely cold winter.
These acts by the eleven African American soldiers has been authenticated by research in the Army archives and by an investigative reported from a Washington, DC television station. The Belgians celebrate the sacrifice made by these soldiers each year and have erected a monument in their honor. Kip Price along with a few others have made an effort honor Mr. Stewart and his colleagues here in America. The Aubrey Stewart Project is working to restore the homestead of Aubrey Stewart that still stands in Piedmont, WV and make their story known across this country. If you want to know more about this project go to www.theaubreystewartproject.com or contact HC 72, Box 220, Keyser,WV 26726. You can also call 304-790-4203.
