I realize that there will be a lot of blogs and other articles written in commemeration of this day but I still feel the personal need to acknowledge the effects that 9/11 has had on me.
The morning was really just getting started. My wife and I were getting the kids ready for school and I would soon be leaving for work myself. I turned the TV on and the image of the first tower with smoke billowing out of it greeted me. I don't know what I thought it was at first, but it didn't really register that what I was seeing was the middle of a terrorist attack on The United States.
I called my wife into the room and showed her what was happening. When the kids entered they saw us standing there, tears streaming down our faces and they didn't understand, and truthfully, we didn't understand either.
A short time later the second plane hit. What a terrible site. Watching the tragedy unfold before our eyes. We were stunned just as the entire world was stunned by what they were seeing. We still didn't understand.
We heard the news of the brave passengers of flight 93 and the devastating attack on the Pentagon. We knew the events were related and we knew who was most likely responsible, but we didn't understand.
Now ten years later we saw the rise and the fall of patriotism and flag waving that followed in the aftermath of that tragic day. We saw our brave men and women being sent off to various theaters of war to bring the fight to the enemy and we saw many of them die. We hear the rhetoric that America, the great satan must die and we hear our own saber rattling in response and through it all, we sit here seeing human beings not acting like human beings at all and we simply do not understand.
