Network marketing is a frustrating experience, or at least it can be at times.
Why can't people just see the opportunity I have just laid out for them? Why are there questions so off track? What is it going to take to convice them?
I've been in sales for over 20 years. I started my sales career selling Kirby Vacuums door to door. I did that for about 10 years. During that time I asked the same kinds of questions for pretty much the same reasons. A mentor I had at the time took me aside and let me in on a few key facts that I didn't seem to be aware of up to that point.
The first thing he told me is this; Some Will, Some Won't, So What? But Loren I said, if I don't care about my job how can I effectively perform it? That's when he pointed out the old "numbers game" concept. I see marketers today saying to ignore the adage, but if you want to understand what is happening in your business you can't afford to throw that one out.
He told me to care about my career. To care about what I was doing and why I was doing it and who I was doing it for but in the end, some people either don't care about themselves or they simply cannot see the same thing I could see. No amount of sales technique can ever change that. Once I got to the point where I knew that if I did my job well, the sales would just happen I became a much better salesperson. I didn't have to care if one particular person bought from me. The numbers always worked themselves out for me in the end, if one didn't the next one would, if they didn't either then I was in for a double pretty soon. The key is just not giving up.
The second thing he taught me was to stop being blinded by money. I want you, the reader, to take a dollar bill from your wallet, pocket, purse, whatever. It doesn't matter what denomination it is. Now, put that bill right up across your eyes. Make it so the only thing you can see is that dollar bill. Tell me what else you can see, clearly. The answer is nothing. When the dollars take up our entire vision we don't see anything else. It's a rather simplistic illustration but true nonetheless. Take time to ask the "WHY" and then answer it.
The most important thing he told me came next. "If it isn't so, don't say it, don't even imply it." I kinda think he stole that from Zig Ziglar or a similar personage, but it's the best way to make sure that you don't get bit in the backside by your own dishonest practices.
Now, let's go back to the first paragraph. Why isn't this person buying from me? We don't know but maybe he or she got burnt by someone, or they know someone who did, or they are just afraid that they are going to be. Are they sold on you? If they were this wouldn't be a big issue.
Maybe they are sold on you but they simply do not have the money or they are afraid to spend the money due to some circumstance in their life. You don't know. You have no way of knowing. Just keep it in mind. The Bible talks about dusting the feet off your sandals and moving on. Sometimes you gotta just hit the road and go to the next door.
