I watch and am amazed at how marketers nit pick one another for saying things a certain way or presenting themselves as this or that then they turn around and use the equivalent verbiage in their own promotions. Why? Greed and shortsightedness.
This is, IMHO, because they are trying to make sure that they make their dollar before their "competitor" does. This is an understandable goal, but to me it would make much more sense to cultivate a relationship with that "competitor" and receive a tremendous value back for that effort in several ways:
1. They might end up making the competitor a partner
2. They can learn new things from their competitor
3. They can avoid being stigmatized as a negative person no one wants to do business with.
4. They can make a new friend with new contacts, opening up venues they never would have had otherwise.
5. They can feel the sense of satisfaction at having done the right thing for the right reasons.
In the end we can take a few lessons from our mothers.
If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all
You attract more bees with honey than with vinegar
Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone
