Ants vs. Slugs Proverbs 24:30-34 (NIV)
30 I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense; 31 thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. 32 I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — 34 and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
Laziness. You’ll get out of it what you give when it comes to business. No work, no pay.
A lazy businessman is called brother of one who destroys (Proverbs 18:9), this is perhaps because he destroys his spirit along with any chance at success. No one can start a successful business without actually putting in any work, even though many Internet scams and dishonest online schemes claim so. Real businesses always take a tremendous effort to get up and going. Start a new business will affect the entire family. Eventually things become normal, but work is still a priority, sometimes even requiring the entrepreneur to constantly be on call.
Proverbs has something else to say on this topic… Proverbs 6:6-11 (NIV)
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — 11 and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
It takes a lot more than a possessing a positive attitude to be successful in business. Success requires a lot of hard work along with determination AND it takes time. If we don’t put forth any real effort, how can we possibly expect a good harvest? No amount of praying and believing is going to change that. Even the lowly ant has to prepare for the winter in order to eat. Just like the ant, we are called on to work hard and not grow weary in well doing. The Lord wants to bless our hard work with abundant success. Ephesians 5:14-16 (NIV)
14 This is why it is said:
“Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Be very careful, then, how you live —not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil
Our lives are meant to be lived with purpose. We have to make the choice to be steadfast and work hard. Not just in our business lives, but in every area of our lives. It is only then that we will have joy and peace and true prosperity. The kind of life that no amount of money could ever create!
