Attitude: Cause or Effect?

Do successful people have the most confident and positive attitudes? Is their attitude a result of their being successful? Or, could becoming successful be a result of their having a confident and positive attitude? Shakespeare wrote "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt". How many opportunities have we dismissed within seconds without even a bit of curiosity? How many times have our sales pitches been rejected within seconds of starting? Is this the result of attitude? So can our own attitude sabotage our efforts to succeed! I say absolutely! Can the attitude of our leads sabotage your solicitations? Absolutely! So what affects our attitudes? I call attitude a thinking habit which is called into play by either an internal or external stimulus. In coding language, attitude could be considered a triggered subroutine of thought. ( Stimulus -> Response). So if we tried a different stimulus we may evoke a different response. Maybe if our pitches are being shunned, one reason could be the doubts of the listener or reader. We have at least three choices that we can make when our lead says no. We can continue to try the same strategy perhaps with more intensity, accept the no and go to the next lead, or have a longer term solicitation that involves building trust first. This is costly and time consuming but may be worth it. Once you have someone working with you who gained trust in you, they will most likely stay with the program longer than someone who decided yes before you finished your first sentence of your pitch with all other things being equal. Caution! It is very hard to get someone's trust if your attitude is one of doubt.
