A mongoose’s closest relative is a…what? A "mere" meerkat! Really?!
Are you at all familiar with the story of David and Goliath from the Bible? If you are, ‘nough said. ;)
A cobra has enough venom to kill a full grown human (figure 150-200 pounds) in just 30 minutes, but the mongoose is the only mammal in the world fast enough to dodge and counter-strike the cobra. Couple that with the “armor” the mongoose has: its naturally thick coat. A mongoose only weighs a maximum 10-11 pounds, so one venom-laden bite from a cobra and your mongoose “goose is cooked” about 10-20 times over (depending on what human weight you apply in the calculation versus a mongoose).
I find the whole “David defeating Goliath” and “Mongoose defeating Cobra” idea VERY fascinating. I mean, this is the ultimate, epic “underdog-coming-out-on-top” story.
Pretty cool, huh? I sure think so!
