Sprint or Marathon? race, marathon, perseverence

Have you ever heard the saying, "Life is like a marathon?" Whoever first said it was almost certainly trying to encourage people to keep trying when things get tough and to have a patient yet tenacious approach to life. But I thing whoever it was that said this didn't get it quite entirely right....
Life isn't one very long race. I believe it's actually a long series of shorter races that we find ourselves apart of. Each task we're confronted with has its own problems and challenges. Each day has its own event. True, you have to get out of bed the next day and race again, but it's never the same exact race as before.
To be successful, you have to keep plugging away. Think about it like a football game. Even though there are occasional "big plays" that get you downfield in a hurry, getting down the field usually takes place and produces more success when you gain short, yet productive yards on each down.
I recently was reading about Christopher Columbus and the difficulties he faced while he sailed in search of a new passage to Asia. He recorded in his journal about all the hardships he faced: storms, hunger and derivation, and extreme discouragement. In fact, the crew of the three ships were at one time near mutiny, but Columbus persevered and day after day he started his journal the same way......"Today we sailed on."
His perseverance, his courage and his willingness to face each days new challenges eventually paid off for him. He didn't discover that fast route to the Indies, but instead he found new continents. But as he sailed all those troublesome days, his focus was clear.....making it through each new day. Winning each short race.
And that my friend is the key!
