As we continue on the topic of defining moments (better know as "aah-haa" moments), many that may happen in your life and business will not be positive ones.
I've experienced many difficult moments, but these moments have given me an opportunity to stop and make needed changes in my life.
One such moment was in 2001. I was helping an extern in the technique of drawing blood from patients, and allowed myself to be her patient. Since the blood was already drawn, we decided to further her learning on the proper way of filling out the proper requistion for lab tests and sent my blood sample out for a test called a PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen). A test for men that checks the prostate.
Only 33 years old at the time, having an abnormal result was the furthest thing in my mind, however; the test came back a few days later showing an abnormal elevation. I had the test repeated and again the results were abnormal and I was referred to an urologist.
The urologist looking at my test results told me that based on the abnormal levels, I may have had in fact, an early form of prostate cancer.
Really? At only 33 years old?
Over the next few weeks and while receiving further testing, I spent a lot of time refecting on my health. I was working to hard, I wasn't taking enough time with my family etc., a lot of eye opening revelations. The bottom line, my life was out of balance.
I learned a valuable lesson that I can sum up this way:
Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling five balls in the air. You name them - work, family, health, friends, and spirit and you're keeping all these balls in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls- family, friends, health and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these , they will without a doubt end up scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same.
You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.
I was fortunate. I dropped the health ball, it got scuffed, but it didn't shatter. You see, after all of the testing, it was found that I have a condition in which my PSA level will always be abnormally high, which in turn, causes me to have more regular visits to the urologist than the norm.
I don't know what kind of "balls" you may be juggling, but I recommend that you not wait until one of the important ones falls before examining your life. You can make changes without having to experience a heart breaker!
