Tribute To My adopted Mother on Mothers' Day, Or How To Ease The Fears Of An Adopted 4 Year Old Girl

I was born on December 6th, 1939...  During WWII, I guess because so many women were involved in the war effort, kindergarten started at age 4 so my story starts when I was adopted at 4 years old...

I had a step-brother who was 15 years older than me & he was in the Navy serving in the Pacific on an aircraft carrier... My Mother had a picture of one of those ships hanging in the hallway so she could help me visualize where he was...

Even though I was only 4 at the time, I can remember this story like it was yesterday & I will never forget it... I was walking home from school when a few of my classmates started taunting me, "Ha-ha! Linda, you're 'dopted"... I don't think they even knew what it meant, I know I sure didn't... They sure made it sound like it was nothing you would ever want to be... I cried all the way home... When I ran into the house my Mother called me into the bathroom, she put her arms around me to soothe me & she asked me what happened... By this time I was sobbing as she put the lid down on the toilet so she could sit me on her lap...

She said, "Ok Linda, tell me what happened"... After I told her she held me close to her & said, "Linda, let me tell you a story... Your Dad & I tried three times to have children of our own, but it wasn't meant to be... They were either still born or lived for a few days & then died... Three months after losing the last one we went to this great big ship like the one in the picture in the hallway... It was filled with hundreds of babies in cribs on the deck & we were told we could have our pick... As we walked through all these babies we couldn't help but notice they were all crying... As we continued our search for just the right baby, all of a sudden we saw one baby in the middle of all those that were crying... This baby was smiling & even laughing... Linda, that baby was you! Dad & I agreed we had found the one baby we wanted"...

My Mother then went on to tell me, "Linda, most parents aren't able to choose their babies, instead they have to keep the babies they are given... Dad & I were able to choose the baby we wanted & Linda, we chose you!"

Needless to say, the tears were all gone & I couldn't wait 'til the next day because now I had the perfect answer for those kids...  "Ha-ha...  My parents chose me!"

I became so very proud of the fact that I was 'dopted...

This is for you Mom...  I love you!!!

Mom, thank you for that story... I finally had the opportunity to share it like I have wanted to do for such a long time... Mom, you always made sure that I went to Sunday School where I was taught to always have faith in Jesus & we are all equal in the eyes of God...  Thank you for that, for that has never left me...  My faith has always given me the strength that I've needed to overcome many obstacles in my life...

I'm so proud that you were my Mother...

I will always love & miss you, Mom...
