My Belated, But Heartfelt Memorial Day Tribute For All Who Served...

Please excuse me for not posting this in time for Memorial Day... Murphy, you know the guy whose law always pops up at the most inopportune times? Well, he set up residence in my computer this weekend... I'm sure most of you have met Murphy at one inconvenient time or another... Instead of getting frustrated like I used to, I practiced patience, so I could work out a solution to my problem & now here I am... Whoopie !!! I solved it myself... I evicted Murphy from my computer... At least for now...

I always have a bit of a cry around this Holiday seeing all the gravestones in the cemetaries across the country... My late husband Billy, was a Navy Seal who spent 37 months in Vietnam... He was just starting his fourth tour when the Navy decided they could no longer use him... When he returned to the states he told me he was like a maniac... The Navy gave him a meal, a place to sleep overnight & in the morning, without any debriefing, gave him his Honorable Discharge & turned him loose... Four days later he wound up at Woodstock where he fit right in with his hair so long it reached his butt... He had, after all, just come out of the jungle...

He headed for New York City where soon after he wound up with a heroin addiction... It took him 31 tries going through treatment before he could finally kick his "habit" in 1985... We met on Christmas Day in 1994 so he'd been clean for 10 years... Being a recovering alcoholic with 3&1/2 years sobriety I had some understanding of substance abuse... That 10 years was good enough for me even though I could only imagine all he'd been through...

He told me more about his experiences than he'd ever told anyone else... He inspired me to write a Welcome Home dedicated to our Vietnam Veterans because they only got spit on & called nasty names when they returned home... It was very well received & wound up in a few of our National Museums... Billy was very proud of that poem, just knowing he was the inspiration behind it...
He passed away on 11/18/2010...

I included a copy of the Poem in my blog, A Garden of Many Seeds... That page is devoted to all those who served... If you read it please leave a comment below the Press Release... Thank you...
