Seniorisms: Building Character...

January 5th, 2018

This year I am celebrating my 27th year of sobriety by reverting back to my book of notes that I took while attending AA meetings ...

Character isn't something that just happens, but rather something we accumulate through our experiences... It is built upon the foundation of our strength & hope for the future... We can either grant permission to allow our negative experiences of the past take root & allow them to drag us down, or we can perceive them to be a positive force by learning from them & using them for good to influence our minds to help us keep moving forward & upward … Remember, one's character may be learned from the adjectives they habitually use in conversation...

Today I'm reminded of those unsung heroes as I watch the news with almost half of our country in a deep freeze after one of the most horrific snowstorms we've ever seen... Today we will learn of many situations where people are putting the needs of others before their very own... This makes it evident that true character is built in the privacy of one's own mind, not really evident until it surfaces & is displayed in times of crisis bringing the true heroes into the spotlight to the rest of us...

While it's true that lives have already been lost this weekend, many will be saved because of these people whose character will shine like a beacon among us... We seldom know the names of these unsung heroes, but we thank God they walk among us... Without them in our midst many more lives would be lost, along with the added suffering of their friends & families...

So today I want to give thanks to all those who possess that strength of character to just do the right thing, in spite of potential personal risk... May God be with you to guide your steps in the face of peril...
