Seniorisms by LMW: "Why I Turned To Clowning"...

The year was about 1993... I was 53, just me & my rescued Doberman... I was determined to make a major change in my life... My journey started when I spotted a special bike in a small bike shop near where I lived... It was a scaled down replica of an 1888 Columbia Boneshaker (Penny Farthing in England)... It was bright red, had a 27” front wheel, high handlebars & the frame dropped down to a little 12” wheel in the back... Bikes have been my passion ever since my Dad taught me how to ride one... I just had to buy this bike! When I rode it for the first time I knew instantly it was meant for me!

Now I needed to find out how to show it off... It wasn't built for speed or distance... Parades! I needed to learn all about clowning so I could enter the parades!... I got a couple of books from the library to get me started learning how to put on the makeup... Through trial & error I pursued my goal, & became a solo entry in the parades... I would request to be placed behind a marching band where I could bounce up & down keeping time to the music, doing donuts on the bike... I interacted with the crowd by hollering out to them... I was having the time of my life!

I lived in Clearwater, Florida at the time... Most of the parades were at Christmastime so the weather was a little cooler... I decided instead of having a tree, I would put my money to good use by decorating my bike... That way the entire county would see my Christmas decorations... I wound green, red & gold tinsel garland between the spokes, all around the frame, put a pinwheel on each end of my handlebars & the final touch was an oogah horn... A friend of mine was a seamstress... She helped me modify a costume, so I was all set...

In Clearwater, I was "Clearwater Crackers", the bike was my "Cherry Bomb"... The largest parade was in St. Pete... They have a band called, “The Greater St. Petersburg Area Awesome Original Second Time Arounders Marching Band”...  (The "Rounders") is, as the name implies, the very first band of its type, and known to be the largest permanent adult marching band in the world (approximately 500 members)!  It consists of people who used to play an instrument in high school...  They they range in age from 18 – 85...

I was accepted as their mascot & became “Re-Pete of St. Pete”... The bike became “The Recycle”... That made "Re-Pete of St. Pete A Recycled Clown For The Second TimeArounders”!  Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to travel with the band, but I enjoyed performing in the County where I live.  In one of the largest cities in the county I was awarded “Best Clown Entry”, just me, myself & I, over all the clown groups in the parade... Thank you, Napoleon Hill for teaching me all about the value of imagination & enthusiasm! I wound up gaining a following from one end of the county to the other...

Sorry this was so long but I just barely touched the surface of the story about my clown escapades... Maybe I'll write a book...
