Seniorisms! God Nudges & Gratitude On Overdrive…

Been seein’ some tough times lately…  Not as tough as many these days, but tough enough for me…

The evening of July 3rd there was a severe thunderstorm & a bolt of lightning struck close to my apartment…  It was strong enough to fry my computer, phone & TV… Then came the stories of the severe fires in California…  My best friend in the world, GTO lives in Redding & that’s right where the Carr Fire was headed… I kept monitoring that fire even though I didn’t know which side of town he lives on…  The stories, photos & videos appearing on the TV & internet were horrifying… Then, my oldest son called me to let me know his cancer had returned in the form of a spot inside his liver…  He had been free from stage four colon cancer for awhile after his fourth surgery… He was told that was the last surgery they would be able to do because of the scar tissue… My writing has suffered because of this chain of events…  My concentration was shot & my focus? Forget it…

Well, that was the bad news…  The good news is I have a friend who has a degree in Computer Science...  He was able to get my phone working… He located a new motherboard for my TV & fixed it…  Next, he was able to order a factory reconditioned Dell Desktop for me because he knew what my computer needs were…  He also managed to locate software that would allow him to retrieve most of the data from my old laptop… God Nudged me again to let me know how fortunate I am…

My friend GTO from Redding texted me to let me know that he was fine, but because he was forced to evacuate he didn’t know if his apartment was still there…  After three long nights & only a couple of texts he called me night before last to let me know he had been assisting people wherever he could, but he’s back home now…  After looking over the situation he discovered the fire was halted just two blocks away from his apartment… God Nudged me once again letting me know how fortunate I am when I realized the number of fatalities whose lives that fire had claimed & the number of homes that had been destroyed…  I still have a wonderful best friend...

My son called me to let me know they had done a Cat Scan & they will be able to treat his cancer & the prognosis there sounds pretty good…  They’ll be treating it without the use of Chemo or Radiation, but with a treatment known to be effective on this particular type of cancer… He will be undergoing this treatment soon…  This sounds like his life now has the hope of being spared… God Nudged me again to let me know how fortunate I am… I lost my second son in January of last year… My only daughter had a triple bypass, suffered a massive stroke around Christmas of 2016 & has been in rehab ever since…  My third son suffered from prostate cancer but they caught it early… He is now cancer free... In 2010/11 I lost my husband, our home, our two Great Danes & went into a depression for three years… There’s a reason God put my best friend GTO into my life… He has a degree in psychology & though he lives 3200 miles away, he was there for me & helped to see me through to the other side…  I am an AA success story… Even with these tough times, having 27 years of sobriety, I never felt I needed a drink or that a drink would solve these problems… I chalk up these events to, “Life Happens!” I’ve also realized, the number one cause of death is birth… Those are two things we all have in common...

I will not allow myself to live in the past thinking only of what I have lost, but to live in the present, being mindful of all that I have now…  I’m grateful for all the wonderful memories that may become somewhat faded over the years, like an old photograph, secure in the knowledge that at least no one can steal them from me...  Each day I try to practice, "Extraordinary Happyness"...  When I have difficulty finding it I turn to my music for peace of mind...

Signing off 'til next time this is,

Linda Michel White (aka Ivory)
