Seniorisms by LMW, Life Without Limitations

According to all the negative medical advertising on TV, I should be living my life with limitations…  After having given it much thought, I remembered I didn’t pay much attention to them while I was growing up, so why should I let them stand in the way of anything I want to accomplish as an adult…

Example, I had been having tremendous pain in both knees so I agreed to having three arthroscopic surgeries, one on the left & two on the right…  I wasn’t happy with the results so I went to see my primary care physician… I was told he wouldn’t be seeing patients for awhile because he was having surgery done on his ankle…  I asked for the name of the doctor doing his surgery & then for a referral for that doctor… That was good enough for me to know that my doctor trusted him enough to do that kind of surgery on himself…  When I saw that doctor I told him I wanted both knees replaced… When he asked me how soon… I asked him how soon could he do it? He told me next week Tuesday, but he said he would need blood work done & a chest xray… This was decided on a Thursday afternoon, so I had him write the scripts for what he needed & we scheduled the surgeries for both knees…  I couldn’t see delaying it any longer when I knew it would have to be done anyway… I reasoned the sooner I get it done, the sooner I would be pain free… Surgeries went well, but the rehab didn’t… The gal that was in charge caused me to injure myself so I quit rehab there… I live about 4 miles to an olympic size pool where they had water aerobics classes & I went 4 days a week…  I owe my speedy recovery to that… 9 weeks after the surgery I did the 4k cancer walk in my area… At 12½ weeks I did the 25k bicycle tour for diabetes… I came in last for both events… I was told by the officials that wasn’t true because I beat out all those who were sitting at home on the couch… When I looked at it that way I felt pretty proud of my accomplishment… I guess it’s been about 8 years since my replacements & I’m so glad I made that decision…  I don’t believe in pain medication, though I certainly relied on it for the surgeries… I stopped it just as soon as I could… In spite of the pain, I eliminated a big limitation as to how I would live the rest of my life… My message to anyone looking to undergo that type of surgery, if you delay the surgery, you’ll only be delaying the recovery too… Today I’m happy & my knees are pain free!
