A person's perception becomes that person's reality. Or another way it has been said is, there is no reality, only perception.
Without becoming too philosophical, that is the challenge we encounter each time we have an interaction with anyone. We have mindsets that cause us to view things from our own unique perspective based on our own personal experiences, opinions, and the influence of those we value.
It is very helpful to have some idea where a person is coming from before attempting to influence his/her viewpoint. A quick example, I was having a conversation with someone about how bank interest rates are determined and the person said that the his sister had said a rate being considered was way too high. Well, it was actually a VERY favorable rate for that person's circumstances and my immediate response was that she was not as well informed as she needed to be. Turns out that while I was correct, his sister worked for a bank ... guess who had more positional power, credibility and influence! I would have been much wiser to have taken the time to find out what his sister's background was. Even though the rate HER bank turned out to be even higher for this particular person it was not the best way for me to handle the objection.
Since we all have more in common than what separates us, just a bit of rapport building should help inform us of another person's perspective.

| | | | | Absolutely! We need to listen first and understand others views and feelings before we can get them to understand ours. Excellent points! |
| | | | | Good lesson,Lonnie.Thats why God gave us two ears and only one mouth. We are to listen more than we speak.A T&L my friend. |
| | | | | Taking the time to listen is something many marketers miss. We have to remember it is hard to be the right kind of help if we don't know what a person's needs really are. |
| | | | | Thanks for giving us this sage advice. I agree that actively listening is a skill we can always hone. To your success! |
| | | | | A great read Lonnie, it is important when we're conversing with someone that when I say apple the other person has the same idea of what an apple is. Thanks for sharing your thoughts my friend. TB&L |
| | | | | Excellent example of why two ears lisening are a lot better than one mouth talking. Rapport and perception go hand in hand. |
