Opportunity + Education + Action = Success
This formula is attributed to W. Clement Stone by Dale Calvert, so if you are familiar with either of those two gentlemen then you know there is a lot of experience, insight and wisdom contained in that equation.
Dale Calvert helps to flesh it out by stating that the opportunity needs to include the right timing; you need to be positioning yourself in front of a large trend that has not yet established strong brand name identity and customer loyalty.
Education is best understood in our industry as having the right mindset and skill sets. Part of the correct mindset is to be willing to continue to learn and grow as things progress as an active self learner ... formal education can make you a living, self education can earn you a fortune.
Action orientation is another mindset that will take what you have already learned and apply it to the market place. While new lessons are to be learned along the way, a person cannot afford to wait until he/she knows everything there possibly is to know before taking massive action. The best balance is to act on what you already know while being willing to learn and adapt as you progress. Knowledge in and of itself is only of benefit to someone that will put it to use. You (combined with a good mentor) already are the expert that many others are willing to look to for guidance and leadership. In our industry it is not as much about what you can do as what can be duplicated.
There may be moments of doubt along the way ... when those happen you must persist! Hold to that purpose (WHY) that drives you and stay with this formula because it will not fail you.
