Most of us know at least parts of the story of John Chapman ... better known as Johnny Appleseed. The image of a kind hearted gentle soul wearing coffee cloth for his clothes and a tin pot for a hat is the stuff great stories are based on. Kind to the earth, its creatures and all the people his encountered, Johnny Appleseed lived his life in a way that benefited others and as an example to us all.
Did you know there is a business model to be discovered in his story too? Johnny Appleseed did not just randomly spread those appleseeds, rather he planted orchards and then fenced around them to protect the trees and fruit from livestock. Most of the variety of apples he planted were sour ... good for making cider and vinegar. Because Johnny Appleseed was among some of the earlier pioneers, he blazed the trail west into the area of Ohio ahead of many that would follow. "In some periods of the settlement of the midwest, settlers were required by law to plant orchards of apples and pears in order to uphold the right to the claimed land. For these reasons Johnny Appleseed's pre-planted orchards made for popular real estate on the frontier.(1)"
After planting an orchard Johnny Appleseed would leave it in the care of a neighbor and then come back every couple of years to tend the apple nursery. Those who helped him tend the nurseries would sell trees on shares. Johnny Appleseed left an estate of over 1600 acres of nurseries that he had acquired over his lifetime.
So by following his passion and networking with others Johnny Appleseed was able to help many around him to prosper.
The new frontier of cyberspace is still expanding out in front of us and the "seeds" we plant today can produce bountiful harvests of results from the "nurseries" of duplication that we create as we share our passion for the things we promote online.
The uniqueness of his appearance helped Johnny Appleseed to standout in a crowd, yet his ideas on how to build successful nurseries was something that many could duplicate!

Total agreement that virtual cyberspace is the next frontier...plant now to harvest later. Thanks for sharing this inspiration. |
