Even though it is not my first year in network marketing I decided I was way overdue reading “Your First Year in Network Marketing” by Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell. From the first chapter I knew I was in the right place and that what I heard for years about this book was more than true. As they say “never too old to learn.”
I am in chapter 4 where the authors discuss some of the reasons people with the potential to succeed in network marketing fail/quit.
Some of the key points identified that need to be addressed with new marketers but are missed when recruitment takes place:
1. Providing a realistic picture of the potential of the business
2. Dispel the belief that this is a business that does not require effort
3. Companies need to be more forthright about the need to recruit large numbers of people in order to make the income desired if that is truly how the company is structured.
4. Provide clarity regarding the time it will take to be successful in this business otherwise the distributor may experience frustration and leave the business.
The authors stated and I am in total agreement based on my own experience that when a person becomes partners with you honesty will help the person be prepared for the tough times. When a company or sponsor promotes “you do not have to recruit we will do it for you”, or “you will make thousands of dollars in 30, 60 90 days” and he/she does not. Is it a surprize that the person believes something is wrong with him/herself or that the sponsor and/or company have lied.
These are some of the reasons network marketing has a bad rap in the business community. We all know bad news travels faster than good news.
What is resonating with me from this chapter is that I now know what bug hit me when I was with other companies. I did think I was a loser and that everyone else was making money except me. It is obvious that none of the sponsors I had previously had read this book or if he/she did must have chosen to forget about the emphasis on integrity.
I am also proud that I did not need this book to practice being honest with my downline and I continue to share my struggles and what I do to overcome. Would you believe I can tell when someone in my downline wants me to lie to them. I can see in their eyes the need for me to share that this will be fast and easy, but I will not do that. Either you want this and will do the work or you can go bust your butt for your supervisor and see what it gets you in the end.
I look forward to the rest of the chapters in this book and I hope you get and catch up to me. If you have read this book please comment below and let me know what you learned.

 | | Thank you all for your comments and other book suggestions. This is the age of the entrepreneur and we all have an opportunity to role model. When we lead appropriately we will have downline retention. Lets not leave anyone behind no matter what our business is. |
| | | | | Thanks for sharing this!! :) |
| | | | | This is a great post here. I'll be sharing this now. |
| | | | | I have never read the book however agree with what you shared. A lot more honesty would make the internet marketers life easier. |

| | | | | This is a great article here. I'll be sharing this for you. |
| | | | | This is an awesome blog and so very true. If a sponsor is upfront and making sure people understand all the realistics of the business and that it is a journey and not a destination then there would be better retention. This is a must read. I will be passing it along. |

| | | | | Thanks Lydia for your blog. A lot of us are/were surprised to hear that it is hard work, at the beginning - all that is usually documented are the successes, and it IS a GREAT LEADER who tells of their own failures, and what techniques that worked to get them to the success that they currently have. Thanks for the share, and the info on where to get the ebook. Best of LUCK to you! |
| | | | | You have a very good post here. I'll be sharing this for you. |
| | | | | nice blog keep up the good work |
| | | | | Great blog and I appreciate the book recommendation. Once you have been burned by a sponsor who is not blessed with "the ability to tell the truth" you develop a sixth sense about what to believe. Thanks for sharing! |
