Don Merril shared in his blog post “What Is Your Perception of Reality” ( www.ibosocial.com/dmerrill/blog.aspx?blogid=104513 ) that:
Personal development coaches tell us that we think what we think because of the programming we have received all our lives. Most of that programming was negative in nature (don't do this, be quite, don't complain, etc.) designed to teach us how to be good little boys and girls.
It started me thinking till a few random thoughts connected together and lit a light bulb over my head. I remember one of my children having a cute little t-shirt that said, “My name is not NO! NO!” I was always very careful about distinguishing between the child and the action. He wasn’t mean, the act of taking something away from his sister was mean. Affirmations should always be written in the positive because to the subconscious mind there are no negatives. The mind has to picture that “don’t” item before it can move onto the positive.
As we teach youngsters, for they are our future and hope, we should learn to put things in the positive. I know it is easier said than done. We are the grownups and we can do this. When you tell someone "don't" you leave a void since now they need to figure out what to replace the incorrect action with. What if we gave them the "do" instead?
Don’t draw on the walls becomes Use your crayons on this coloring book and I can hang it on the refrigerator when you’re done.
Don’t play with your food becomes Eat your food one spoonful and a time.
Maybe we will even find that some of the don’t can be turned into laters.
Just maybe, Don’t splash in the puddles can become Let's splash in the puddles after school when you can change out of the wet shoes.
If children can be raised with positive resourceful mindsets, it will be much easier for them to succeed in whatever they attempt.
=================
If you’re still trying to overcome a negative mindset, I highly recommend that you check out Mind Movies. When "don’t" has been used so many our whole life, some scientific brain training can help. ibourl.net/MMTransform

| | | | | It is so good to see someone with such a great positive outlook and reality...it is so hard to keep it up when surrounded by lots of negativity...Loved this..thanks for the info |
| | | | | Excellent advice. A negative can always be turned to a positive and if more people followed that path this world would be a better place for us all. |
| | | | | Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this Marian. It is true that our "programming" starts when we are young. The sooner it starts becoming positive in nature the better off we will be as we get older. Much success! |
| | | | | Great article, very enlightening and inspiring, thanks for sharing Marian, always a pleasure :) A Like for you my friend! |
| | | | | Very thought provoking and timely thanks for sharing...... |
| | | | | Thank you Annemarie, Larry, Sandy, and John. |
| | | | | We love it. The positive should be expressed and enhanced in our lives. Society may progress instead of the constant regression towards lowering humanity to animal status. But the schools have taught that there is no morality for we are but beasts descendants. Accept your prosperity quotient and remove all limitations. |
| | | | | Wonderful blog, Marian and great suggestions for turning negatives into positives in not only our children lives but our own, too! |
| | | | | One "don't" I wished I would have heard. You don't have to go to school. Very good points Marian. We are saddled with negatives our entire life. If people where made to feel a sense of worth everything in life would Simpler. |
| | | | | Great blog, Marian, as usual...childhood development is foundation of adulthood and I agree diversion is so much better than STOP negativity. Now if we can just find some puddles to play in the heat! |
| | | | | Thanks for the inspiration Don! |
| | | | | Yep. I agree with this and Thanks for the mention. I will tweet this blog post for you. |
