What is Email Marketing?
In simple words, it is a process where businesses market their brand, services or products to the public via email.
Day in and day out we are exposed to several kinds of marketing campaigns. The best example is when you are watching ads on TV, reading print ads in a magazine or looking at an advertisement billboard. Email marketing simply means that people receive ads in their email inbox.
Why is Email Marketing So Important to Online Businesses?
Before I answer that question, let me ask you something. Where do you go for fishing? Obviously, you will either go to a lake, river or sea and not just sink your bait in your bath tub and keep praying for fish, right?
If your business is online, your potential customers are online and what is the best way to market your products and services? Obviously it should be via their inbox, because email is a tool that they use to keep track of all their online communications.
Sending your marketing campaigns / messages directly to your potential customer’s inbox is the best form of direct marketing. There could be nothing more direct than addressing your customer by name and intimating them about your latest product.
How do You Get Their Email Address?
Email marketing is a multi-step process and acquiring email addresses of potential clients is just one of the numerous steps. Before you can get to this point, you will first need to arrange for a software or program that can handle all the steps smoothly and automatically for you. Such a program is known as an Autoresponder.
Automatic Email Marketing with Autoresponders
Having an Autoresponder is a huge help in easing the pressure off your brain. You simply have to design your marketing campaign / newsletter and schedule it using the Autoresponder service and the messages will be sent to your customers / subscribers automatically at a predetermined time. You can automate your Autoresponder to send different messages to different groups of your subscribers.
Getting Potential Customers to Sign Up
Once you have set up your Autoresponder service and designed and filled in the marketing campaigns or messages that you would like to send to potential clients, you need to find a way to get their email addresses. Though it looks almost impossible to you, a good Autoresponder can take care of that as well.
I use Aweber as my Autoresponder service provider and it offers a huge range of features for me like free templates for sign up forms, click tracking, protection from spam filters, easy unsubscribe option for subscribers who wish to drop out, 99% delivery of emails and many more such awesome facilities. Here is a demo video for you.

What Can You Do With These Email Addresses?
Well, if your potential customer has signed up it means you have permission to send messages to him / her and you can use their address in several ways to boost your online business. But before you scurry off to bombard your subscriber with loads and loads of unwanted messages each week, take some time to read through the free email marketing tips and dos and don’ts here.
There is a very fine line between doing and overdoing email marketing, so tread very carefully. The best practice suggested by expert marketing professionals is to have a healthy combination of editorial and promotional content in your messages. In my opinion, you should follow the 80-20 rule and send useful and informative content (newsletters) 80 % of the time and reserve only 20 % for ads and marketing.
