I shared in a prior post that I’m on a personal development journey. If you missed the post, it's on my blog. Initially, I thought personal development was mostly about having the right mindset. But it’s really so much more than that. To me personal development means that I am striving to become the best me that I can me.
I am currently reading books by Jim Rohn and Napoleon Hill to learn how to create the right mindset. Recently, I joined a program called Am I Hungry to address issues with food and my weight (future posts idea!!). I’ve been walking on the treadmill every other day to get in exercise on a regular basis. At my job, we get emails on various topics, mostly centered on wellness. The latest email series is on time Management. After reading a few of the emails, I realized that time management is part of personal development too.
My friends and family know that tardiness is one of my pet peeves. It drives me crazy when someone is late, or does something that makes me late. I’ve always been that way, and being on time is a habit I intend to keep. Time management however isn’t really about being on time. It’s about effective management of ones time.
If we keep a time diary and documented what we did throughout the day, we would probably be surprised how we spend our time. Think about it – how much time do we spend reading and answering emails? How about watching television? What about Facebooking? Is that a word? If not, it is now. :)
I created a mental time diary of my day yesterday, and realized that I am in serious need of time management. I leave my house everyday around 7:30 and return between 4:30 and 5. I tend to go to bed at 11:30, so I have at least 6 – 7 hours in the evening. That should be enough time to make dinner, do laundry/clean, write a blog post, and unwind. But because I do not manage my time properly, my evenings are nothing like that.
A typical evening is treadmill, Facebooking, dinner, more Facebooking, working on my blog, maybe a load of laundry, dishes, and television – not in the order listed. If I am going to become the best me that I can be, so that I can help my team in my primary business, then my time has got to be managed a lot better then it is now.
I saw an exercise about creating a healthy time line that sounds promising. The first suggestion is to keep a time diary, like previously mentioned. The instruction is to divide your day into 30 minute slots and record everything you do from the moment you wake up until you go to bed. At the end of the day, go over what you’ve written down and see if you’ve spent the day the way that you wanted to.
If you’re like me and in need of some serious time management, seeing how you actually spend your time, may help determine where you need to make changes. 6 hours in the evening is more than enough time for me to do everything that I want to do. I just need to make a conscious effort to do it.
