Coping With Stagflation As you see a home based business is what many are doing to make ends meet. The economy has put a burden on more people than one would think. Here's how to make the most of your investments in a tough economy. A Chicago firefighter is among those Americans who feel the effects of rising prices and a sluggish economy. He has endured increases from gasoline, groceries, vacation, budgets, private school tuition bills, also a decline in his 401(K). Like many full time workers, some even has a part time job also to make ends meet. His wife a stay at home mom has a home business on the internet to help with the household expenses and mortgage as well. They no longer drives expensive cars, but has down sized in order to save on gas. Eating out a few times a week has been cut down to cooking at home as well as going to the theater to watching movies at home. Family vacations has been reduced to once a year or less It seems as if the 70's had returned with the combination of double-digit inflation and economy malaise popularized the term "stagflation." Supply shortages have fueled inflation today as well The rise in oil prices have put a strain on the pocket. Fewer workers are unionized versus 30 years ago, and they lack the bargaining power they had back then. Workers had a voice in having their wages respond to prices and not cast adrift as they are today. One reason there are fewer unionized jobs because those jobs were mostly manufacturing, which has moved overseas. Investors should take measures to hedge against inflation. Another key strategy is to look at companies that not only offer value but also have high gross margins. One counsel felt his clients should generate additional income through side businesses creating some sort of passive income stream outside of your portfolio which is a very good investment.
