When it comes to the cost of funerals, we are all shocked when we finally are in the moment of planning one. Sure we see all the commercials advising us to get any type of insurance to help our loved ones with these high costs. But, most of us chose to ignore this advice. When in the end, you just wished you had listened.

When I was faced with the planning of my Mother's funeral 3 years ago, I was completely shocked with all the costs associated with honoring your loved one the way they so deserved. My Mother did not have a will or any insurance and we ourselves were not in a very good place financially. So, we set out to learn about ways to reduce the cost for my Mother's funeral.

We did accomplish many different things, but the one thing we did not was the cost of the obituary. The average cost of a newspaper obituary is around $300 to $500! That is a lot of money for ones that are struggling themselves. The obituary, you will find, will be the hardest thing for you to have to do while planning a funeral. You want to ensure you honor your loved one and to also include all the names of the ones that meant so much to them. Our quote given to us was $600! This was not including a picture as that had an added cost of $150. We decided we could not afford that and we were left only writing 3 lines - which basically stated that she had passed away and where the funeral was going to be. The cost - $189!

We realized at that time that we were going to try to find a way to ensure that no one would ever have to go through that again. For most of us, this is the most difficult thing we will ever have to do in our lives and we should not have to spend so much of our time while grieving, ensuring that our loved ones obituary did not have too many words as for us to not be able to afford to post it. We did not want anyone to have to resort to counting words or ensuring it was not too long so you could afford it.

Well along came the idea of Missing You Forever. This is a website that allows anyone to write as many words as they want about their loved one and post up to 4 pictures. This also includes a Guestbook and you are able to share it via social networking sites, email it or print a copy to keep for yourself. We also wanted to include a page to show some very nice memorial gifts and also an area to assist others in writing an obituary.

We are not programmers or not familiar with coding. We then went out and hired a very reputable programmer to create a site that we knew that everyone could use. It took about 9 months to complete and in the end, Missing You Forever is exactly what we had envisioned.

Making an obituary site that is affordable and very user friendly was what we wanted and we were able to achieve that. We hope that in the end, this will assist ones with lowering at least one cost of a funeral to ensure that they are able to say all they wanted to say.

Thank you for your kind words Ann. There was just so much to go through when my Mother passed away that I just had to help find a way to give people more options! Yes, another fact is, we all need to think to the future and make plans like your parents did. It lessens the stress and make it easier on the grieving. Thank you for that Ann ~ God Bless

That is wonderful, the first I have heard of it. A truly needed site as more people are online and able to get the information.

Interesting article Sue. It's a shame what these funeral homes charge people. I'm just going to do a very basic cremation. I can't see spending money on high priced funerals. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your comments Lonnie and Cynthia. Any cost effective way to reduce the costs of a loved ones funeral is needed nowadays. Obituaries are one of the most over charged parts of planning a funeral and I want to ensure that no one ever has to go through that experience again.

My mother passed about two years ago. I understand your situation. I do not want a funeral or memorial but a cremation. If people do not visit me when I'm alive, there is no need for a memorial, no flowers too.
