Am I Taking The Childhood From My Child? Miss Insight 4 U, continue to teach your child this summer

Does your child's education stop because they are out of school for the summer or do you make sure even a trip to the grocery store is a lesson?
I ask these questions because I am often told that I am too hard on my 6-year-old daughter. Yes she is six but she will be going to the second grade in the fall. I know how lazy she can be and since I am a parent that believes I am just as responsible for my child's education as her teachers, I make it my business to be a big influence of her education.
For instance, if my daughter is in the store with me and wants something bad enough, I make her count out the money to the cashier. The challenge is always the same, if you can count out the change to the cashier within one minute of getting the total, you can have the item. Sometimes she is not up for the challenge, sometimes she doesn't get the money counted in the one minute time frame and sometimes she shocks me, the cashier and the people in line behind us. Either way I am ensuring she knows how to count money in this "swipe your card and go" society.
Since she is out for school she is still learning about being a productive citizen in society by attending summer camp. The summer camp she attends teaches the children how to respect others, themselves and the planet. By getting more exposure to arts and music (they do a wonderful job at the school she attends) and learn about different career paths, she and the other campers minds are open to a lot of possibilities. They even have a vegetable and herb garden they are caring for!
Lastly she belongs to a summer reading club, offered by a wonderful teacher at her school, for students that are going to the third grade. Since she is reading on a third grade level, I felt that she should be reading third grade materials and getting challenged on how to discuss and write about what she has read.
So you see, just because I make my child read and count money does not mean I am taking her childhood from her. I just want her to see first hand what actually goes on in the world. Besides you know kids know EVERYTHING anyway :)
This is my insight for you and please stay involved in your child's education.

 | | Great post, thanks for sharing! Liked and Bumped! |
| | | | | Great blog. My wife home-schooled our kids and this was a big part of re-enforcing what they were learning in class. |
| | | | | We parents need to make learning fun for our children. For example if your child notices something in a store, spell the article to her and have her spell it back to you. Be safe. Have a great day. |
