The Division 2 won't be available from third party stores

The Division 2 is nearly upon us, and Ubisoft has revealed the last drips of info in the pre-release blitz. Pre-loads are live on PC, and release times are out there thanks fo a fancy new chart running down when the game will unlock in every region. As with seemingly every modern game, things get confusing with early access in more expensive editions, so let’s break it down.

Remember the days when you could just pop a disc into your PlayStation and play it immediately? Those days are long gone, we're afraid, and this fresh information about The Division 2 is a grim reminder. Ubisoft has noted that those who purchase the game physically will be prompted to download an absolutely massive 90GB day one update.

According to the announcement, Ubisoft will not allow digital third-party stores, such as Gamesplanet, to sell The Division 2 after its release on 15 March 2019. After this date, The Division 2 digital version will be only available through Ubisoft's Uplay and Epic Store. The same rule applies for all upcoming The Division 2 content such as Season Pass and DLCs. Gamesplanet's announcement also mentions that players should contact Ubisoft's support for all potential issues that may occur after the launch as they won't have any more keys to exchange or swap once the game releases. That other “exclusive digital store” is of course the Epic Games Store. Ubisoft announced in January that the company had struck a deal with Epic and had no plans to launch The Division 2 on Steam. However, at that time it wasn’t clear that third-party key retailers, who generally sell keys for use on Steam, Uplay, or EA’s Origin launcher, would be barred from selling the game as well.

Ubisoft recently revealed that The Division 2 has more pre-orders than the original and that sales on Uplay are six times higher when compared to The Division. Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot said that the decision to partner with Epic Store helped them to do "more business on Uplay store" and to have a "better revenue per unit sold".

The Division 2’s early launch is not nearly as confusing as Anthem’s was, mainly because it is platform agnostic and doesn’t require subscriptions to services only available on certain platforms. If you get the premium editions of the game, you’ll have the ability to start playing on March 12. If not, you’ll jump into the game with everyone else when it fully launches on March 15.
