Success Magazine once conducted a readers’ poll, asking the question, “What freedom do you enjoy most about being an entrepreneur?” Readers could choose one of five responses:
Controlling your own income
Owning your own time
Being your own boss
Sense of purpose from living our passion
Freedom from the corporate world
You could logically guess that “being your own boss” would be the most popular aspect of entrepreneurship. It tied, at just 11 percent, with “freedom from the corporate world”, another logical choice. But the largest vote-getter by a wide margin was “sense of purpose from living your passion.”
Human beings seem to have an in-born need to matter, to achieve and to make a difference. In a society that prizes temporary glitzy celebrity over quiet long-term achievement, it’s difficult to feel like you make a difference to anyone but your family and close friends.
But no one belongs in an anonymous rut. A belief that one has purpose is essential to happiness. Whether it’s passion for an idea, a cause or something more tangible, those who live their passion enjoy life as others never will.
If you have a passion for something while you’re toiling in the rut, perhaps it’s time to re-think the opportunities for change that come your way – often in plain sight.
