Filter Words, and Why You Should Avoid Using Them

Article Marketing

We all know that search engines are very picky but you need to realize that the words you are using for your keywords and content may be hurting you more than helping you. Search engines filter certain words and phrases, and can even ban your home based business site completely when using them.

Every search engine has its own unique list of filter words but generally the smaller, more common words such as ‘I, A, An, On, This,’ and so on, seem to be ignored by most search engines:

What does this mean to your website you ask?

Search engines pay attention to keywords in the title of your web pages, in the body text content, and in-link text of a website as important criteria when ranking your site.

You need to be very careful when choosing your keywords for the title and the rest of your page. If your sites title contains a number of filtered words, you won’t get anywhere. You might also make the other keywords on your page obsolete if you include too many filtered words in the title of your page.

Most search engines recommend keeping a limit on the number of letters in the title and in the meta tags. If your website title or meta tags contain too many filtered words, you might reach the character limit before your important keywords even begin.

Some words can even get you banned completely by search engines. While some filter words may make your other keywords useless, some words might get your website banned completely on search engines. These words are referred to as ‘stop words’ in the home business industry.

Adult words and are definitely the most common stop words. Some search engines, however, use custom stop word lists to counter web sites that use ‘keyword stuffing’. Some website owners use the same keyword over and over on their pages to get highly rank for that keyword even if it has nothing to do with their content.

Keyword analysis is very important for a successful web site. If the keyword density is very low, you site won’t be effective and thus won’t get a good rankings. If it’s too high, your website might get in trouble for keyword stuffing. While most people suggest 1%-3% as a general rule, I believe that having a lower number of keywords is always the safer bet.

In the end you want to make sure to:

a) Use your most important keywords at the beginning of the title, meta tags, link texts and body content text.

b) Avoid using filter words where possible.

c) Never use stop words.

d) Make sure that your web page has a good keyword density.

To conclude, the right mix of keywords on your pages will help improve your ranking with search engines.
