Solve This Problem Before You KNow You Have It

DISCLAIMER: The links associated with this PR do NOT produce any commissions for me. I realize some people may not even know they have this problem, but it may just serve as an eye opener for them.

If you visit many websites on the Internet for whatever reason, you may have clicked on links that use a URL Shortner. Some use them to protect affiliate links with a shorter link that looks better and keeps people from changing it to eliminate their commissions. Whatever the reason, what they may not realize is that if they have a problem with the link, they probably won't even know it.

I can't begin to count the error messages I have seen after clicking one of these links and it just ends up being a commercial for the link shortener website. I am just glad that is no longer is a trap I fall into.

A couple of years ago, I purchased a domain name of my own and installed YOURLS (A link shortner script) in a subdirectory there. So the link is friendly (ex. MyDomain/recommends/free-blog or MyDomain/example/hot-program), but it only goes to my own private URL shortner where I control everything.

I can have as many links as I want, but I also added a plugin to set a Fallback URL. If I delete an old link for whatever reason, when someone trys to access it they get redirected to any site I want them to Fallback to, instead of showing an error message.

I also added some bookmarks on my browser that create a short URL and post it to a social network site in one click. If I set up a new page, I can post it to Tumbler or Twitter and be able to see how many people click and where they came from automatically, which is an amazing time saver.

If you are going to use a URL Shortner, make it your own!

Just in case you fear it's over your head, I used a $1 a month hosting account with a one click install for Yourls at NoSupportLinuxHosting.com
