Over the past several months, I have actually taken the time to examine a number of opportunities online. What I found did not surprise me and I would doubt that you would be surprised either.
I took the plunge and participated in a couple of FREE offers that promised to pay me same day. Of course I had to pay money for the offers I signed up for, but to participate, it was free.
The results were less than what I bargained for since I had to subtract my 'investment' from the cash that I received. It brought me to less than half what was promised, but at least I was ahead at the end of the day. But there was an awful lot of work for a mere $35. And yes, it took me far more than an hour to complete the tasks necessary. But, it was cash on the barrel, paid to my PayPal account.
About a year ago, I created an affiliate marketing program in which we used OpenSky as our base offer. Each of my members signed up with my site ( adincome.net ) as an affiliate and I signed up as the main affiliate with OpenSky. They were paying just $5 for new signups but I was able to do a multi-tiered structure to turn those $5 payments into thousands of dollars (potentially). After spending a great amount of time and effort in building the site and attracting hundreds of members, OpenSky changed their payment schedule. They rendered our payment system useless as they went from $5.00 to $.10...yes, that is correct. One thin dime. But it was a free program and I cannot complain because they did pay as expected and there were no other complications.
I have interviewed a few people who are making serious money online. One builds Wordpress sites for small businesses, one simply blogs and makes money from the traffic and yet another has a full-fledged online store. Each of these people have a different slant on earning online, but all take the position that it takes money to make money. The online store uses their customers' money (upfront payments) to purchase and resell items. The money that it takes is other people's but it is money nonetheless, in the mix. The website designer had to invest in templates and programs that allows him to build sites efficiently. The blogger had to invest in products that he sold through content specific blogs.
Over the past year, it has become increasingly clearer that in order to create an affiliate program for "the masses", that is, a program that does not require years of blogging and traffic building, we have to have people who are not afraid to invest a small amount of money, especially if the payouts are decent. Our current offer features a product that each member is expected to purchase. We collect just over $100 for a sale that could cost our members about $80. You will immediately see that the numbers don't exactly add up. That is more than 100 percent commission on a single sale. But the company is counting on our members staying around more than just one year. And the product lends itself to that possibility.
I have all but given up on free offers especially when you consider that you have to misspell the word 'free' or disguise the offer so that it makes it through spam filters. And while I see nothing wrong with trying to connect with all of the people out there who are looking for free offers, I find it far more enriching and, dare I say, more rewarding than most of the free programs.
I know that there was nothing scientific about my investigation, but suffice it to say, those who are not averse to spending money for a quality product are much more appealing as customers than those who simply want a free ride.
