Much has been written about our first President, George Washington. Even back in the day when I was in private grade school, the only thing I remember my teacher telling us is that George Washington could not tell a lie and he chopped down the cherry tree! I am convinced after reading about our first President that virtue were definately a part of him. It's sad to think that this is the only two things that I remember being told by the greatest man in the history of our country. Had it not been for his virtue, his strong convictions, undying devotion to fight for a country where we could enjoy religious freedom and freedom from tyranny we would not have taken the 5,000 year leap for our civilization. He said so many profound things and these are his own words, Advancement - Should stem from your own efforts. America, To be preserved by God. America, To be an example to the world. There is a great deal more on those bullet points but I would run out of space on my blog! Another crucial point was his feelings on debt and because this has become a monster for the US, I will chose to quote his feelings on that on this Presidents Day. Borrowing - A Dangerous Place.- "There is no practice more dangerous than that of borrowing money;...for when money can be had this way, repayment is seldom thought of in time, the interest becomes a moth, exertions to raise it by dint of industry ceases, it comes easy and is spent freely, and many things indulged in that would never be thought of if {they were} to be purchased by the sweat of the brow. In the meantime, the debt is accumulating like a snowball rollling." This was written to Samuel Washington (1797). If he could see his country now. George Washington was a man of honor and if people have resentment for these old men in white wigs, think again about what they sacrificed so we could have the opportunities we enjoy today. There is much more to be said about the First President then he chopped down a cherry tree!
