Imagine having to go back in time... No more flip of a switch to turn on the lights or heat or air conditioning. Imagine having to go out and cook your food over an open firepit, not much temperature control with that method. My boyfriend and I live on 5 acres in a somewhat rural farm community, actually quite by choice. We have also decided that season permitting we attempt to grow our own vegetables with a fairly large garden. We've tried many different vegetables and the one thing we always end up mastering are pumpkins! There are so many insects that attack our vegetables and we get dismayed at that wondering how in the world do the farmers do it! But we strive every spring to do it all over again. With that pioneer spirit we are also attempting to use our wood burning stove this Winter. To be honest it hasn't warmed the house the way the man in the store promised it would, much to our disappointment. But we keep trying and we were very fortunate to come across scoring some really big logs. So now we (I really shouldn't say we), he is attempting with chainsaw in hand to start cutting these logs and splitting them with the old ax. It's no wonder years ago people really didn't work the 9-5 jobs, no they didn't sit in traffic, deal with a boss, but the challenges they met were actually more stressful. They had to make sure they did these chores of survival everyday and women did their share of manly chores. Not because they wanted equal rights but because they merely had to do it to survive! Needless to say my boyfriend has been in pain the last few days from cutting and chopping, so be greatful the next time you flip that switch and a miracle occurs because I know I am!
