Patience is the companion of wisdom - St. Augustine

Patience is truly a trait that most people struggle with. In our fast paced 21st-century environment we live in, everything is instant, and has immediate results. Because of this, we are used to getting what we want in a matter of a few seconds, or minutes.

When we experience situations which take a little extra time, most of us find it difficult to cope with this change. We fail to realize that sometimes, certain things require more time than others. Our emotions are heightened due to the small inconveniences we experience in our everyday lives. Since we are so used to instant gratification, patience is getting harder and harder to practice.

Although the technological advancements that we so highly rely on these days are a great innovation, it also has its negative effects. In the not too distant past, errands and tasks which were more time consuming allowed people to be naturally patient. However, these days it's the norm to live a fast paced lifestyle, because if you don't keep up, you will get left behind.

Traffic is one of the most common challenges we face in our day to day lives. It's inevitable that most places get busy and crowded. As a result, it will take more time to get from one location to another.

People used to be okay with this reality, but since technological advancements came into our lives, it started to become a nuisance. Coffee used to only be made manually by mixing the ingredients together. These days, no one has time to wait for boiling water, and spend a few more minutes preparing coffee in the morning.

You can easily buy ready made coffee in vending machines, or on the street corner. We don't need to whine and ruin our day because of the long lines at the train station. When the elevator stops at every floor, it's no reason for us to start getting furious. Negative energy attracts negative things.

It all depends on your mindset. Patience shows that you have self-control. It allows you to be a more confident, engaged, happier, and healthier person. Our ability to practice patience is related to having higher self-esteem, and overall great interpersonal skills.

Wisdom is achieved only when you practice patience. They go hand in hand, and one will not function without the other. In situations which requires a longer period of time, you will not feel stressed out, when you are patient. This is because you understand the reality that sometimes certain things can only be achieved with time.

I love the wisdom expressed in a quote by Saint Francis de Sales, "Have patience with all things, But, first of all with yourself."
