The young man know the rules, but the old man knows the exceptions

The young man know the rules, but the old man knows the exceptions

As young men or women, we want to learn a trade, or a profession, something we are interested in. For example, we go to a business college, and become knowledgeable about matters related to business.

After graduation, we may think that we know everything, because we are trained in our field. We may even think that we can be considered experts, and that we do not need advice or help from anyone.

Big mistake! We might be all eager to tackle the world. We are all pumped up about the possibilities. We have the right positive attitude, but once we go out into the real world, we quickly learn that all we really know is the theory about how things should work.

There is a big difference between going to school, and going to the school of hard knocks, where we learn how the real world operates. It is a world where we are expected to produce. So don't dismiss advice from older colleagues. They have been there, they have done it.

Think about it, why is it that corporations pay their executives big salaries? People in those kinds of positions have experience. They did not just come out of school and became executives. They had years of experience, working in various capacities in the business world.

Even for those of us wanting to start a part-time business, the same holds true. Whether online or offline. Taking courses is great, and is very helpful. But the wise thing to do would be to seek out people who have actually done what we want to do, and learn from them.

Find a mentor to teach you what it takes to succeed. Having a positive attitude and positive expectations is a prerequisite. But an experienced mentor can be a shortcut to your success!
