working from home or working from your office by Trevor Mausch sfi, tripleclicks, trevor mausch

I found this article and found that I hit on several reasons that I work not only from my home office but I make time to work offline. I like the diversion and it makes me stay in contact with my team and get connected with what others are really needing.
1.You gotta get out in the world and mingle w/ peeps. Its easy if you work from your home as an online entrepreneur to get stuck in a rut of spending days upon days seeing nothing but the 4 walls of your house. Heck, even for the most disciplined entrepreneurs (I wouldn’t necessarily lump myself in that group we just need interaction… and its nice to be around energy sometimes. Business is a social thing… when you work by yourself… sometimes the only thing you get social with is your keyboard. 2.Movement and action spawns more movement and action. I know when I worked from home, those were the years I got my businesses off the ground… and made my first million in sales… all from home. But, what happened with me once the “newness” and startup excitement that kept me flowing was gone… I needed outside stimulation to raise my energy level up more. So now at our Entrepreneur c0-workspace “The Loft” that I started… there’s always people here… always people in the lounge… always someone to bounce ideas off of if I need a break. 3.Make a clean break from your work life and home life. If you’re married, have kids… you know how it is. You’re excited about your business… and all of the sudden you’re up in your home office at 11pm with the lights out staring into your computer like a moth during the summer. Its hard as heck to make that clean break… but the thing is… you and your better half… your kids… again YOU… need that separation so you can at least half way turn your business mind off for a few hours at night. 4.Getting an office can probably make you money. Yep, you’ll probably have to start forking over some sort of monthly rent payment for an actual office… but, in the end, you’ll be more productive… you’ll be around other people who may potentially turn into business for you… and there are a whole heck of a lot of ways to actually turn having an office into a direct money making source… like I did When I decided to go full-time into an office downtown… I decided if I was going to do it I wanted to make money from it and be surrounded by other entrepreneurs… so I found a large empty building downtown… got creative with the owner, and started The Loft… an entrepreneur co-workspace which other entrepreneurs pay me to work in this space now. Win-win-win. Think outside the box… getting an office doesn’t have to cost you money at all. 5.Gets the creative juices flowing! Okay, I’m not saying a cubicle or just the act of having an office gets your creative juices flowing… you can do that at home too. But, for me… when you work and live out of the same space… the environment doesn’t vary a whole lot… and it turns into the same ol’ same ol’. So, if you still are protesting against an office… set up a few days a week to work out of a cool coffee shop w/ eccentric people coming in and out of it every day (great people watching at coffee shops … go to a park by a river or something… get yourself out of the normal environment… and this goes for people who have an office too. 6.It forces you to get dressed. Lol, this one sounds like a joke… but if you’ve ever worked from home… you know what I’m talking about. It’s pretty damn easy to get up, eat breakfast, check your email… then the next thing you know its 10:30am and you’re still in your scivvy’s with your empty bowl of cereal in front of you. I’m guilty of this happening a time or two… but, once I made the decision that it was time to take my businesses to the next level (and live a more quality existence) getting up and going in the morning BEFORE you ever think about diving into email or work is what I needed to do. 7.It’s not an all or nothing gig… so you’ve got flexibility. When I first moved out to the office I was thinking I’d be working there every day and never work at home… never go to the coffee shop. I was wrong. I find myself working out of the office usually 3-4 days a week… sometimes 2 days a week… half a day or so at home… and then a few random days somewhere else like the coffee shop, park, or on a vacation. So, when you have an outside office… or even have a co-workspace that you like to go to… it gives you options. The more options you have for varying your work environment the better. The whole “office or no office” debate all of us entrepreneurs have is a funny one… and more times than not I see people (myself included) thinking I’ve just gained some sort of outerworldly freedom when I started working at home. Man, “I can wake up when I want… don’t have a commute… gas bill is cut to almost nothing… lunch is right there in my fridge… I can have world war 3 in my bathroom and I don’t care because there’s no-one else here (don’t say you’ve never held back going the ol’ #2 at an office because you didn’t want other people to know it was you, lol)… this is THE LIFE!”.
Then, as the cycle normally goes… it turns into… “Oh man, is it seriously 11am already? I need to get dressed… my physical activity for the day was taking out the garbage… I talk to people on the computer more than I talk to people in real life”… not to mention the looks you get from your spouse because your “work” is all over the place. Now, I’ve seen some people who absolutely love working at home and will never go back… which is awesome. Fo me I like to work from my home office and work at other places, I like the diversity. I found the online and offline mix has helped me to grow my team and be more balanced. I hope this article helps you to work more productively and connect with more people and grow your business.
