Many years ago while I was in private practice as a Dietitian one of my patients, a gentle giant of a businessman, introduced me to this exceptional book "Six Thinking Hats" by Edward Debono. It is truly the most exhaustive approach to analyse and solve any problem I have ever seen...business or personal.
I highly recommend a study of this truly thoughtful, thought provoking book.
The objective is to layout everything you can possibly think of that is part of the problem, and find a solution keeping all of these aspects in proper perspective. It is accomplished by "putting on a hat" that represents good, bad, emotions, facts etc. It is fun because you can be very negative when you are wearing the black hat...people expect this of you. You have to be in character for the hat you are currently wearing. It is a very organized approach to problem solving.
Here is a summary of the 6 thinking hats and what they represent:
#1 The White Hat: Facts and figures. Pretend you are a computer..you have to be neutral and objective here presenting all the facts you can come up with that pertain to the problem at hand
#2 The Red Hat: Intuition and Hunches
Intuition is both a sudden insight and a quick understanding of a situation based on experience. Both are valid with this hat. I have a feeling....
#3 The Black Hat: What is wrong with it
It is the logical negative, critical judgement. This is a extremely important part of thinking...it is always logical...always negative..never emotional.
#4 The Yellow Hat: Speculative positive
Optimism, positive thinking, focus on benefit..it is constructive thinking and making things happen . It is the exact opposite of the black hat.
#5 The Green Hat: Creative and lateral thinking
This is where new ideas, new concepts and new perceptions are conceived. It is the a purposeful creation of ideas...alternatives, change, and new approaches to problems are presented. It is the act of "thinking outside of the box".
#6 The Blue Hat: the control of the thinking
There is a need for a director and this is the hat the does it. The blue hat directs the other hats...what is needed right now...facts...the negative..or benefits....or say...we need an other alternative solution to this issue, etc. The blue hat thinks about thinking, gives instruction for thinking, organizes the thinking, and controls the other hats.
When the process is complete..there may be several very interesting solutions to the issue. And the participants know that every aspect of the problem has been considered.
This is but a very brief overview. The "6 Thinking Hats" book provides more detailed in site into the roles each hat plays in the problem solving process.

| | | | | Well Renita, you stirred a few memories with the Mention of Edward de Bono. I can remember reading one of his "Lateral thinking" books many years ago. A great Author and it was a great help to me at the time. thank you for the Reminder.

| | | | | Absoutely...Edward de Bono is one of my favorite writers and lateral thinking programs used in classrooms. The hats are all inside the brain and must be "worn" one at a time until a decision is made. This shows why selling a new idea is so hard! You have made my day...thanks for sharing. |
| | | | | I first had this book 20 years ago and enjoyed googling it again this morning. I believe it will be valuable in guiding anyones thinking in which business to get into along with many other decisions ..it is lateral thinking. Enjoy;)
